Synopsis for "Hearts & Minds"

In the past, at Prescott Prep School in Harbor City, a student named Garret asked Mi-Sun Kwon if she made up her mind on wanting to buy his pills, leading to another student named Henry Bucher intervening and getting pushed down towards her. In the present, at the main building of the Police Plaza, Nudge was reunited with Gambol and demanded that he release Grunt before her teammate burst from his restraints and attacked the circus owner. A policewoman aimed her gun at Grunt but when she shot through Vortex, the latter hero attempted to break up the fight. In Key Mordaz, the Chief had already stabilized Metamorpho's condition before Sapphire told the Doom Patrol that his rampage was a result of one of her father's experiments that involved attempting to make Rex appear human again. The Chief told Rita that Rex needed treatment at a bio-molecular level and asked if it was "up her street" before Negative Man came out of her, causing to lose consciousness.

In the past, Mi-Sun's father felt pain in his chest before she bought pills from Garret while Henry was spying on them and a woman was observing them from her car. In the present, Nudge was surprised when she saw Vortex unhurt by the bullet before Grunt grabbed both of them and jumped out of a window. In Key Mordaz, the Chief gave Metamorpho a containment suit as a holding measure until he could find a better way from interacting with the environment before the former turned his attention to Rita and planned to find another way to contain Negative Man.

In the past, after taking Garret's pills, Mi-Sun and others started to feel their effects and she felt her brain expand as if it had "the whole universe inside of it." Garret was frightened as he had also felt the effects despite not taking the pills and ran outside before tripping on a snooping Henry as a woman observed them from her car before taking him away. Everyone who took the pill except for Mi-Sun was left unconscious but she could feel all of them like they were inside of her before the police took her away. Later, her parents visited her in a hospital after they were contacted by Detective Guggenheim who revealed that the others took a dangerous drug that "turned their brains to guacamole" and her father scolded her, resulting in him having a heart attack. Meanwhile, the woman introduced herself to Henry as Rhonda Lorre and revealed her plan to take out his brain and put it inside of the body of a genetically engineered gorilla, but also pare away parts of his brain that were connected with speech and memory.

In the present, Nudge, Vortex, and Grunt were fleeing the police and the former sent a code red to her teammates as the Chief was examining Rita for illnesses. In the past, at her father's funeral, Mi-Sun's brother insisted that she tell their mother about her powers although their mother insisted that she wait for them in their car.

In the present, Nudge was feeling Grunt's mind before he took her and Vortex to an apartment. In the past, Henry woke up in the body of a gorilla after three days and Lorre burned his former body as he watched in horror.

At the apartment during the present, Vortex was unfamiliar with Superman's emblem and Nudge asked where he was from before Grunt took out a yearbook and showed them a picture of Henry Bucher moments before the police burst into the room and shot him out of the window, causing him to fall stories high.
