Synopsis for "Bitter Memory"

In the present, at Key Mordaz, the Chief's mind drifted as he was in a tank and he dreamt of himself lying in front of a man named T'oombala who struck him with a hammer. As the Chief screamed inside of his tank, a robot named A-27 came to him before he decided to return to his work although he believed that "everything was finally coming together." Rita and Cliff went on a mission without the others as police officers burst into Henry Bucher's room and shot Grunt and Nudge saved him by pushing him out of the window and slowing down the buckshot of a shotgun.

Rex and Sapphire came upon prison cells while walking through Key Mordaz while the Chief was attempting to reintigrate Larry with his negative energy-self but was interrupted by T'oombala's arrival. Vortex and Nudge jumped out of the tall building and were caught by a giant Rita before she and Cliff subdued Grunt who recognized a female bystander as his mother. In the past, three weeks after Lorre had transferred Henry's brain into the body of a gorilla, he grabbed the keys to his cage from a man who was about to shock him with a rod and used them to escape although Lorre did not think he would be capable of thought of that level.

In the present, at Key Mordaz, T'oombala told the Chief that he no longer considered him a threat but still attacked him, claiming that he did not like leaving a job unfinished. Back in Harbor City, Nudge explained to Henry's parents that Grunt was their missing son and revealed when she gained her powers and when she met Grunt at the circus. In the past, Grunt killed Lorre before breaking loose which caught the attention of the police, as well as that of Gambol's Circus.

In the present, at Key Mordaz, Rex and Sapphire heard an alarm and the hero left her, believing that he had to help the Doom Patrol and as the blonde was left alone, Rubber Maid approached and grabbed her from behind. Metamorpho found the Chief with T'oombala and attempted to fight the latter although he was unable to hurt him and was stuck to the floor by him who planned to "crush the last bone in Niles Caulder's body to dust."
