Synopsis for "Remembrance of Things Past"

After Elihu had impaled T'oombala with his bayonet, the latter boiled away before Cliff rushed the Chief to the infirmary where he was treated and briefly explained who their enemy was. Then, the Chief and Rita turned their attention to Elihu who did not know that he was a ghost and Nudge revealed how she got his help in defeating T'oombala. Rita and Nudge researched Elihu through the Chief's records and learned that his major laid a curse on his bones and that he was listed as a deserter although, in truth, he was caught in an explosion during a Union Army attack. Rita theorized that Elihu was still on Earth due to a lack of proper burial in addition to his commanding officer's curse, so she attempted to find his body although he stopped her, wanting to stay with Nudge longer.

Three weeks later, the Chief showed the team a mouse he trained to obtain food and revealed that its memories of how to do so were transmitted back in time to his past self. As Vortex commented on the experiment, the Chief deduced that he was a mass of chronotropic energy. The Chief explained that his device would send a subject into their own past: into a younger version of themselves. Cliff found himself in Speedway City, on August 31st, thirteen years earlier, at the apartment of Julia MacIntyre. When he woke up in bed, he looked in a mirror and saw that he appeared human to everyone else.

In the present, at Key Mordaz, Rita, Larry, and Nudge rushed to the central lab where they learned that Cliff was using the machine and the Chief assumed that he was attempting to prevent his accident that turned him into Robotman. On the same day that Cliff woke up in Julia's apartment, Rita woke up in the room of her childhood home and raced with her father's motorcycle with plans to find Cliff who called Gus Sullivan and told him that he would not be racing that day. When Rita came to Julia's apartment, she told Cliff that if he did not race, there might never be a Doom Patrol and revealed that she was also a spectator of the race that day. Rita revealed that after his crash, she attempted to visit him at the hospital before watching Niles Caulder take away his body, followed by her getting hired at his company C And V Technologies before his brain was placed into the body of Robotman.

She also confessed that she had a crush on him when she was thirteen, leading the two to kiss although Julia returned and saw Rita as a little girl. The police entered the apartment and found the young Rita and promised to punish Cliff who was behind bars as a guard was watching the race although someone else was racing his car. Then, Cliff felt like "the whole universe was turning inside out" before finding himself on a beach where Negative Man told him that they had to face Madame Rouge and General Zahl as a team although the former was unfamiliar with both villains and the latter and Rita were both dressed in their classic uniforms.
