Synopsis for "Hearts of Darkness"
In December, three years earlier, at a secluded private research facility in Pennsylvania, the Chief had Larry Trainor fly a ship into space before he boarded a smaller ship called the Sunrunner, detected something, and disappeared. Seventy-nine hours later, the Chief and Rita saw the Sunrunner coming crashing down to Earth before Larry ejected. Then, an entity came out of him and carried the Sunrunner away from its collision course with central control. When a weakened Larry touched down, the entity returned to him and the Chief discovered that he was intensely radioactive.
In the present, in Key Mordaz, Rita encountered Faith, Grunt, Nudge, and Vortex who joined her, Robotman, and Larry in fighting the vampire-possessed prisoners. Vortex created a hole and exposed the vampires to the Sun in order to kill them although their host bodies protected them. At the International Soames Lake Research Facility in Antarctica, something burst out of a well.
Back in Florida, Faith and Nudge combined their powers to defeat the vampires at the Chief's suggestion while the entity chased Wormhole and opened a portal and after passing through it, their link was severed, meaning that he would die if it was not reestablished in sixty seconds. The Doom Patrol followed the portal to Crucifer's castle and found the entity fighting the Justice League before Larry was able to control it again. The Justice League, who trapped Wormhole, attempted to turn him into the authorities but he died when he was exposed to sunlight.
One hour after parting ways with the Doom Patrol, Green Lantern used his ring to destroy the castle. Two days later, at the HQ, Faith agreed to help Nudge control her powers while Rita told the Chief that it was best not to tell Nudge that he deliberately put her in harm's way in order to lure Crucifer out of hiding, believing that she would need to trust him if she would be a member of the Doom Patrol.
