Synopsis for "Who Are... the Devolutionists?"
On Christmas Day, in Harbor City, Oregon, Nudge was separated from the rest of the Doom Patrol when an explosion happened at the Chesley Refinery. She was reunited with Vortex when she learned that Rita had been devolved into an ape and Cliff's mind had been devolved into that of an ape. At Key Mordaz, on Christmas Eve, the Doom Patrol set up their Christmas Tree and while Rita built a snowman from snow that was not "nature's handiwork", Nudge encountered Private Elihu Washburn of the Confederate Army although he was not a ghost. As Washburn was about to ask Nudge out to a dance, she was alerted by the Chief's automated alarm and he informed her and the team about thirteen instances of unusual wild animals that were plotted in a distinct pattern.
The Chief sent them to Harbor City on a field mission that was Vortex's and Grunt's first although Nudge wished that it were anywhere else, as she never cared much for the ocean. The Devolutionists detected the Doom Patrol's arrival although he did not recognize them and proceeded to phase two of his plan. As the Doom Patrol drove through Harbor City, Rita was skeptical of Larry seeing a dinosaur in Metropolis and Cliff stopped their car when Larry witnessed a dog transform into a giant wolf. Rita and Cliff fought the wolf before it turned back into a dog. Then, they encountered three velociraptors although the Chief, who was observing through Cliff's chest camera, claimed that they were too big to be velociraptors. As Rita trapped the velociraptors, they turned into birds and as the Doom Patrol returned to their wagon, they were separated from Nudge.
Nudge saw that the lights of her mother's apartment were on and she used a phone booth to call her although while Nudge phoned her mother, her brother Gary frightened her away while she learned about the Doom Patrol fighting prehistoric creatures at the Chesley Refinery. As two men observed the Doom Patrol fighting dinosaurs, they fired beams at Cliff and Rita, giving the former the mind of an ape and turning the latter into one. The leader of the Devolutionists believed that his victory was assured.
As the ape Rita pushed an oil tank down on Nudge and Vortex, the latter shot a beam at it and was barely breathing afterwards. Nudge tried for twenty minutes to contact Faith and the rest of the Justice League and was unsuccessful before she encountered Martian Manhunter who had also been devolved.
