Synopsis for "A Death in the Family"
On Christmas Day at 11:57 PM, in the Justice League Watchtower, Martian Manhunter received Nudge's call for help and went to Harbor City before he was shot with a beam and was given an ape-like form. As Martian Manhunter attacked Nudge, the Negative Man swooped in and flew away with her as the Devolutionists found Larry's body and devolved it before Vortex defeated two of them and took their device. Rita reverted back to her normal self although Cliff did not. As Chief continued his analysis of prehistoric beings appearing, Vortex contacted him and showed him the device.
Although the Devolutionists did not understand what they were doing, their leader was still pleased with the results and planned to expand his operations to a global scale. After Rita shrank, Cliff grabbed her and put her in his mouth before she burst out of his head, turned giant, and picked him up. Then, she ran to Negative Man and Martian Manhunter, the latter who reverted into his normal self. Later, Martian Manhunter used his powers to learn from the two Devolutionists Vortex defeated the location of their master and told Nudge that her powers were powerful enough to contact him on the Moon as Cliff regained his senses.
Cliff, Rita, and Negative Man fought devolved apes and dinosaurs while Nudge and Vortex found and infiltrated the Devolutionists' headquarters before their leader devolved Nudge although his powers had no effect on Vortex whose mask was ripped off by his devolved teammate. Vortex was worried that Nudge would be driven insane by looking at his face although the Devolutionist was not driven insane when he did so. When Vortex used his powers on the Devolutionists' machines, he learned that they were just hollow shells before his teammates arrived, distracting the leader and allowing the hero to blast a hole through him although he was just an empty suit shaped in human form. Nudge reverted to normal before the Doom Patrol went to find Larry's body lying down and when the Negative Man attempted to return, Rita believed that he was dead.
