Doug "Comet" Kelly was a U.S. Army Air Corps fighter pilot in the Pacific Theater during World War II.

In 1942 the Japanese Forces were advancing everywhere in the Western Pacific Ocean, with very few Allied aviators and aircraft to oppose them. Lt. Douglas Kelly was among these, and in his first known enemy encounter, he shot down three bombers and one fighter plane, then single-handedly sank a Japanese aircraft carrier. He later personally rescued General McArter from being captured by the advancing Japanese. On that day he also shot down at lest four Japanese warplanes. On one later occasion he destroyed a Japanese submarine.
