Douglas Nolan was the twin brother of the late Ferro Lad (Andrew Nolan) of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

Douglas was born with the same mutant powers and deformity as his brother Andrew. After Andrew sacrificed his life to save the world from the Sun-Eater, Douglas entered a state of perpetual anguish, as his mind became entrapped in an endless series of alternate-timeline visions. The Time Institute worked to treat Douglas' condition, and ultimately, Brainiac 5 helped Douglas' mind locate an alternate timeline to its preference, wherein Douglas took over as Ferro Lad in the Legion where the late Andrew left off. By an inexplicable effect, this caused Douglas to merge in both body and mind with the alternate version of himself that he perceived within the vision, leaving the mainstream timeline behind entirely.[1]

In a different alternate timeline, Douglas became hateful towards the Legion due to his brother's death and was manipulated by Saturn Queen into attacking the remaining Legionnaires many years later, until being captured by a time-traveling Superman.[2]

While in the armored state, Douglas Nolan possesses the same degree of mobility that he does in his normal form.
  • Superhuman Strength: After transforming into Iron he possesses vast superhuman strength.
  • Superhuman Stamina: Also, while in his Iron form his musculature produces considerably less fatigue toxins than the musculature of a normal human.
