Durkin was a member of the Kryptonian Science Council on the planet, Krypton.

A scientist named Jor-El addressed the council and informed everyone that a dangerous solar flare from Krypton's red sun threatened to engulf the planet, destroying it. The Science Council heeded Jor-El's warning, but only to the extent that they would form a special committee to negotiate a course of action. The ineffective bureaucracy enraged Jor-El and he began slamming his fists on the council table. Durkin was the first to point out that Jor-El was out of line and that his fellow council members would work hastily in order to save Krypton.

Jore-El and his wife, Lara, began development of a special teleportation module that could transmit matter across vast galactic distances. However, without the aid of the Science Council, he could not develop the technology fast enough to satiate Krytpon's needs. They were only capable of transmitting small volumes of matter, no greater than fifty Kryptonian pounds.

Durkin grew suspicious of Jor-El's work and snuck into the family's home. He witnessed Jor-El and Lara placing their infant son, Kal-El into the transport module teleporting him to a planet known as Earth-Prime. Durkin burst into the room and threatened to revoke Jor-El's diploma for conducting such activity without the express permission of the Science Council. He ran over to the machine and began making various adjustments hoping to calibrate it to compensate for additional weight. He attempted to use the device on himself, but his hasty adjustments caused the machine to short circuit and explode. The blast instantly disintegrated Durkin's body.
