Synopsis for "Controlled Burn"
In an alternate universe, the boy who will grow up to be Superman loses his loving adoptive parents in a car crash and is placed in an abusive foster home. A few years later, his super-hearing develops, allowing him to hear the father beating the mother at night. He confronts the man and accidentally kills him with his heat vision, and the horrified woman chases him out of the house. He is quickly arrested and taken to a government facility, but he escapes with his newfound super-strength. He finds the rocket that brought him to Earth locked up in the facility, and it gives him Jor-El's Sunstone.
He flees to the Amazon rainforest, where the Sunstone creates a Fortress of Solitude for him and he meets the hologram of Jor-El, who tells him that he is Kal-El, the last son of Krypton. Kal-El tells his father how humanity has mistreated him, and Jor-El says that he must save them from themselves. Kal-El trains for years to reach the full potential of his powers, and then reveals himself to the world as Superman. For twenty years Superman tries to inspire humanity to be better, but it seems that mankind's basic nature cannot change, as evil still persists.
Eventually, he meets his brother Tal-Rho, who tells him his plan to remake Earth as a new Krypton. As leading by example had failed, Superman joins Tal-Rho's cause and together the brothers destroy Metropolis in seven minutes. Superman ruthlessly crushes all resistance until only John Henry Irons stands against them. He fights Irons in space but he disappears through a dimensional rift. Meanwhile a shadowy figure watches them through a portal.

Notes
- The Anniversary marks the first appearance of many Superman Villains, including Bruno Mannheim, Lobo and Nuclear Man.
- Controlled Burn tells the origin story of the black suited Superman from John Henry Irons' world.
- It also reveals that he survived his fight with Irons during the Crisis as it was already shown in "Through The Valley Of Death".
- The first appendix, Nat's War Journal, which is written by Andrew N. Wong, shows Natalie Irons' prototypes and weapon projects for his father' war against the evil Superman.
- The second appendix, which is written by Adam Mallinger, shows many newspapers from the Inverse World.
- It reveals for the first time that the Inverse World's Earth is cube-shaped like its comic counterpart, Htrae.
- The Daily Planet version from the Inverse World is called The Planet Weekly.
- Jordan and Jonathan Kent's counterpart are referred to as Jordan-El and Jonathan-El.
- They are also mentioned some investigations about Star City riots.
Trivia
- Phillip Karnowsky/Vigilante's suit is more inspired by his Earth-38 counterpart from the Supergirl episode, "The Darkest Place", than the Superman's Earth version from the Superman & Lois episode, "The Ties That Bind".
- The evil Superman mentions considering calling himself the "Savior".
- Curiously, the Smallville episode, "Savior", features Clark Kent donning for the first time a black version of his suit after his training with Jor-El, like the evil Superman does in this issue.
