Synopsis for "Guardian Angel"
Terry Sloan is wearing a bat-wing jet-pack, while Batman trails off of him. Sloan manages to knock Batman off, then flies straight to the remains of the TSS Endurance to recover something. He flies between the robots who are even now disassembling the craft for the city, and enters the ship via a hidden "proto-tunnel".
Recovering, Batman is met by Huntress and the Flash, who want to help him catch Sloan. Huntress mentions that Sloan stole something of hers'. They are joined by Jimmy Olsen, who tells them that Sloan has gone underground.
In the bowels of TSS Endurance, Terry Sloan pops open the briefcase he carried here and activates the Source Vault: a machine shaped like a Mother Box. Built with alien technology, the final masterpiece of Bruce Wayne and built with the assistance of Superman and Wonder Woman, it is a record of all the lifeforms and ecosystems of the old Earth, before it was destroyed by Steppenwolf. By combining it with a device of his own, the Genesis Machine, he can give this planet the ecosystems of Earth. In the wrong hands the technology would have been a disaster...
Twelve months ago, Terry Sloan watched ships settle into orbit around the planet they had christened Earth-2. Sloan's good mood was ruptured by someone hacking into his systems, leading to the bridge staff working together to destroy a gun turret that suddenly opened fire on them. Sloan came to the conclusion that a metahuman on board was somehow responsible, and was betraying them. As contact with the other ships started to drop out, Sloan took the only he could think of: a first strike, taking the ships out of the control of Overwatch-One, out of the control of the saboteur... and out of orbit. TSS Endurance landed at what would be the site of New Gotham. TSS Belgica, controlled by Queen Marella, came down in the ocean, at the site of New Atlantis. TSS Aurora, controlled by Red Tornado, would be the site of Neotropolis. TSS Erebus, controlled by Jimmy Olsen, would be the site of Midwest City.
As the ship-people staggered free of the wreckage, Terry Sloan already anticipated their response. With Overwatch-One in space, they were comfortably beyond the reach of most of their new enemies. He shifted them into a far orbit so as to be beyond the power of Green Lantern, and took advantage of this system's status as a binary system - two suns, one yellow, one red - to counter the powers of Val-Zod and Power Girl by moving them to the far side of the red sun. At this point Sonia Sato proposed that they just tell the planetsiders why they had done this, but Sloan had already decided not to, explaining that his reputation would predispose them to disbelieve - especially considering what he was going to do next.
Leading the crew to Overwatch-One's armory, he explained that Wayne Corp had retained control of Bruce Wayne's Source Vault on the TSS Endurance. They had planned to use it to terraform the planet, but now, the saboteur could use it to turn this world into a hell-planet. Someone needed to secure the Source Vault. Wes Dodds volunteers himself and his Sandmen for the job.
At the site of the crashed TSS Endurance, Huntress tried to rally her forces. Suddenly, an orbital laser strike and the arrival of the Sandman moved her in a different direction, with Red Arrow laying down a barrage of arrows to catch the Sandmen. But thy were too late: Wes Dodds secured the Source Vault, and the survivors teleported away. For the sake of this planet's new society, they had to keep the vault secure.
Tonight, in New Gotham, Olsen, Huntress and Flash spread out to catch Sloan. After a shaky start, Batman does the same, trekking into the bowels of the ship. He finds Sloan mere seconds before he activates the Source Vault. Batman asks what gives him the right. Sloan cryptically remarks that there is so much he doesn't know, and then presses the switch.
A series of bizarre pinnacles burst from the ground, through the ship, and towards the sky, dwarfing the skyscrapers of New Gotham. Atop the tallest pinnacle stands Terry Sloan. As the sky starts to crackle with purple lightning, he exclaims "I am become life, maker of worlds." Batman is not optimistic.
