Synopsis for "Burden"

In the Parliament of Earth, the primal forces of Earth 2 (The White, The Blue, The Red, The Gray, and The Green) discuss the current situation. Blue mentions that the joint foray by their Avatars seems to have failed, and that Apokolips has created another Fury. It says that without the Avatar of The Red - who is currently missing - they cannot hope to save the planet. The Red says it has attempted to summon its avatar, but to no avail, and tries to take the blame. The Green cautions that hope still might exist, as long as the new Fury of Famine - Helena Wayne - doesn't win.

In Siberia, the Parliament's Avatars (Solomon Grundy, Green Lantern, Sam Zhao, Azathoth) continue their battle against the Furies of Apokolips (War, Pestilence, Death, Famine). With Helena just joining the battle, Death greets her, and warns her that all of the avatars have almost assembled. Snidely, Helena says their gathering won't last long, and flies through Azathoth, piercing right through his midsection, and then immediately starts to strangle Sam. She tells him that she brings the famine of the soul, which - as he is the avatar of the White - is his domain. As she continues to sap his soul, the Furies prepare for the next attack, and Alan and Solomon consider what to do, with Azathoth on the ground, likely dead. Alan pleads with Famine to release Sam; she mocks him, saying that he doesn't even remember Alan and their life together. Alan tells her that he doesn't care; he will always love Sam. He turns from pleading to threatening, saying that he'll destroy her if she doesn't release him. For some reason, Helena throws Sam down to Green Lantern, saying that while he may have saved one life, he has now doomed the rest of the planet.

Down in the underground tramway tunnels - remnants of Project Beyond - Hawkgirl and Flash work on clearing out the tunnels and defeating the Apokoliptian robots that have appeared. Hawkgirl yells over to Steel, asking him how long until the train will be coming down the tracks. As he works a control panel, he says it will be there right now, giving Flash only a moment to run the two of them to safety as the train comes barreling down the tracks, obliterating the robots. As Flash celebrates this small victory - and Kendra complains about being dragged around at such high speeds - Jimmy Olsen appears behind them, floating and glowing, followed by a mass of people. He tells them the conditions on the Earth's surface are deteriorating. Aside, Kendra is surprised that Jimmy - who used to be a bit of an anarchist - is now working with the World Army. Steel tells her that he's changed, and become something more than human. Jimmy says the best location to move everyone would be the central launch station, and if they have to, that is where they can make their last stand.

Up in what remains of the World Army's Chicago stronghold, Dick Grayson sits, forlorn, awaiting the impending tidal wave from Lake Michigan. Ted Grant appears behind him and tells him they need to leave. Dick yells at him, saying it is pointless. Ted responds by saying that he's sorry about Barbara's death, but Dick needs to think about Johnny. Grieving, Dick says that his son is better off without him. Ted knocks some sense into Dick, literally, by knocking him unconscious, and throws him over his shoulder, running away as the tidal wave starts to approach.

Down below the Fire Pits on Earth 2, in Desaad's Lab, the group (Power Girl, Red Tornado, Superman II, Batman II, Superman) are confronted by Desaad. Kara and Thomas both immediately go on the offensive, enraged by what Desaad has done to Helena. Before they can attack him, the large doors behind him open, and he reveals that he has been keeping the Avatar of the Red - Yolanda Montez - imprisoned here. The Great Beast attacks them, and as Kara tries to fight back, Yolanda multiplies, creating Red animal wildlife to fight the Wonders. As a large raven fights with Kara and Val, large bears attack Thomas, and large wolves attack Lois and Clark, Desaad mocks them, saying he will make them minions of Darkseid.

Up on Apokolips, aboard the Shackleton Assault Craft, Commander Khan and Terry Sloan continue hand-to-hand combat. With only a minute and several seconds before the bombs which Sloan had wired in the vehicle go off, Khan knocks Sloan to the floor and opens the hatch. As Sloan falls out of the craft, Khan starts to fly the ship away. On the surface of Apokolips, Mister Terrific, Sandman, Fury, and Mister Miracle watch as the craft starts to fly away and Sloan falls. The group tries to grab Sloan, but he flies away in his Mister Eight costume. Back on the craft, Khan decides he will bring Sloan's gift to Darkseid personally.

Down on Earth 2, deep underground in the World Army Escape Camp, Major Sonia Sato contemplates the facilities. Project Beyond - which had been designed to save the leaders of the planet in case of an emergency - had failed when Brutaal destroyed the escape ship. She vows to not let it happen another time. Heading over to the Project Beyond Launch Room, she looks down at the masses of people sheltering here, thinking that the scope of Project Beyond was to save a hundred thousand people, and she has to find a way to save millions. As she meets with Hawkgirl, Flash, and Steel, she explains that they have asked Atom (Sgt. Al Pratt) to shrink down as small as possible and enter a capsule which will borrow down below them. Knowing that the facilities for Beyond cannot accommodate all the people they have to save, she has asked Atom to go a mile underground and grow to the size of ten cities, to carve out a new refuge. Atom does so, and creates Atom's Haven. Having used all of his energy, he returns to normal size and passes away. In thought, Sato thanks him for what he has done, and wishes he rest in peace.
