Synopsis for "Sacrifice"

On Apokolips, outside the Court of Apokolips Tower, explosions goes off all around the planet, the result of the nukes that Sandman (Wesley Dodds) and the away team had set and detonated. The god planet moves ever closer to Earth 2. Darkseid quips that humankind’s most powerful weapons are only fueling his planet. He meets with the Nobles (Paternus, Rectifier, Lowest, Arcanis) and Big Barda. Barda reports that the away team was destroyed when they set of their nukes, and Darkseid tells her to return to Earth and awaken the horde in the firepits to finish off the planet, so that it can be absorbed into Apokolips.

Back on Earth, in Dr. Crane’s lab in Amazonia, Jimmy Olsen and Dr. Crane are together. Jimmy receives messages from the Motherbox that had merged with him; it tells him that it must return to its original owner, Mister Miracle, but that it is leaving part of itself with him. Since he’s now connected to the Source, he’s something between human and god. His new mission in life is to maintain reality, and this gives him special insight to the workings of reality. There is a blast of energy as the Motherbox leaves Jimmy’s body. Jimmy passes out, and the technicians note the nuclear detonations on Apokolips. Dr. Crane holds Jimmy and ponders whether the team succeeded. Jimmy comes to, and says he has some surprising information. As the scene cuts to the Lagrange point between Earth and Sol, he tells Crane that the transmission from Khan gave him information about a Generation Ship hidden there that could hold thousands of people.

Back up on the nuclear blasted slums of Apokolips, the Motherbox flies towards a black bubble in a crater. As the bubble dissolves, it is revealed that the away team (Fury, Mister Terrific/Michael Holt, Sandman/Wesley Dodds, Mister Miracle) survived the nuclear detonations, and Mister Miracle had indeed recalled his Motherbox. They mention that, although they survived, their nukes did not destroy Apokolips. They wonder if the Mother Box can get them back to Earth.

Down on Earth, in London, Hawkgirl (Kendra Munoz-Saunders) and The Flash (Jay Garrick) stand over the body of the former Fury of Famine, emaciated. Famine is alive, but says she doesn’t remember her name before Darkseid made her his Fury when he attacked Warworld. Furies are made of the last survivors of a planet, she explains, and their mission was to come here to destroy Earth. Kendra questions where all of the people went; Famine says they’re gone but will return soon. Flash asks if there’s a way to defeat the Furies; Famine says there is, but it will come at a steep cost.

Over in the skies of Russia, the current Furies (Helena Wayne/Huntress/Famine II, War, Death, Pestilence) continue their battle against the remaining Avatars of Earth (Solomon Grundy, Alan Scott/Green Lantern, Sam Zhao, Azathoth). Huntress taunts the Avatars, saying that the Parliament can’t help them; Alan says that they aren’t the group’s only allies, at which point Flash shows up, telling the group that since the Furies are the last of their kind, they share the weaknesses of their races: War, Tamaranean, is powered by UV rays; Pestilence, Czaranian, healing powers; Death, Martian, weak to fire. Green Lantern instructs Jay to cover War so she doesn’t get the ultraviolet radiation she needs; he has Azathoth suspend Pestilence in water and fill her lungs; and Grundy notes that the Rot is familiar with Martians, and strikes together two boulders to spark a fire. As the three are overwhelmed, they cry out for one another. Huntress cuts through Azathoth, releasing Pestilence, who turns and spews bile on Jay, which seems to incapacitate him. The water released from Azathoth’s injury seems to have also put out the forest fire. Death mocks the Avatars, saying they’re babies compared to her sisters. Down in the Parliament, the Blue laments that he has failed his champion and has no more power. Huntress taunts Alan, who thinks to himself that they need the Avatar of the Red.

Meanwhile, underneath Chicago, Dick Grayson scavenges through the rubble of the derailed train, searching and calling out for his son, Johnny. As he continues to make his way through the debris and shout for his son, he encounters a group of scavengers who mock him and attack him. Dick quickly puts to use the training Ted Grant had shown him, and swiftly takes out the group of attackers. Just as he’s finished them off, Ted shows up, noting Dick’s lack of mercy. Dick retorts that he didn’t kill them. He finds Johnny’s teddy bear on the ground, and the two continue down the tunnel.

Meanwhile, down in the Labyrinth of Desaad, Power Girl (Kara), Batman II (Thomas Wayne), Superman II (Val-Zod), and Red Tornado (Lois Lane) continue to fight off the spirits of the Red Avatar, as both Desaad and a depowered Clark Kent (Superman I) watch. Val shouts to the group to free the Red Avatar, as it will destroy the Fire Pit. Lois tells Clark to get to safety, but he says that since his blood is toxic to Desaad’s clones, he can be useful and buy the group time to free the Red Avatar. As he crawls towards a machine, he looks at his wife and cousin, saying to himself that he has a final opportunity to save his loved ones. He climbs into the machine, which stabs him with multiple needles, and siphons out his blood (with the corrupted DNA), immediately spreading the poison to the clones, including the beasts the group was fighting. The group realizes what Clark has done, and Lois calls out to him as Desaad grins in pleasure. As the group goes to him, Lois holds him. Clark says he had to do the right thing. He says that dying isn’t so bad; they’ve done it before. Lois continues, reminding him how beautiful it was when they had died, and as tears stream down Clark’s face, he closes his eyes, and passes away. Lois cradles his body, as Kara, crying, holds Val’s hand.
