Synopsis for "The Last Gasp"
Alan Scott (Green Lantern) thinks to himself that the five elemental forces of Earth 2 - the Parliament of Earth - are the heart of the planet. Each has an Avatar, and when damage is done to one of the Parliament, their Avatar also suffers that pain. At the moment, an Apokoliptian monster is invading the heart of the earth, the Parliament's extradimensional sanctuary. The Deathspawn has inflicted deadly wounds to The Gray, The White, the Red, and The Blue, hindering decay, atmosphere, life, and the oceans, respectively. There is a glimpse of The Red, struggling on the ground, followed by the Avatar of the Red, Yolanda Montez, also in pain. An image of The Gray, defeated, and then Solomon Grundy (Avatar of the Gray), struggling. Then an image of the Deathspawn attacking The Green, at which Alan says that he is the Green Lantern, the Green's Avatar.
In the center of the Earth, in the Parliament's Enclave, Alan Scott fires a green beam at the Deathspawn. He thinks to himself that he was the only one who was strong enough to travel there, and he has to save all of the forces and fend off the Deathspawn. However, he has to first save The Green. The Green cries out to him for help, but Deathspawn grabs Alan by the throat. He throws Alan into The Green, knocking them both over, and says that he has to prepare the Earth to be consumed by Apokolips. The Green tells Alan that the Enclave is what protects the true core of the planet, and if Deathspawn succeeds in breaking the barrier, it will be the end of the Earth. Green Lantern fires another shot, but notes that it doesn't seem effective, and Deathspawn is growing stronger. The enemy continues to attack the ground and cracks through the barrier, crawling down the hole he created. Alan wants to pursue, but the Green says to help the other Parliament members recover, and hopefully they can then attack; right now, Alan wouldn't survive a trip to the core.
Over in Atom's Haven, the last refuge for Earth 2's survivors, there are earthquakes. Commander Sonia Sato exclaims in shock; and Captain Steel (Henry Heywood Jr.) notes that there are earthquakes all over the world, as if the planet is tearing itself apart. He also mentions that the Firepits of Earth seem to be coming back online and linking with those of Apokolips. In those conduits, Apokolips is sending down strange objects. Sonia orders him to secure the refugees and prepare for the end.
Elsewhere in the Haven, Ted Grant pulls Dick Grayson out of the way of falling debris. Dick apologizes, but says he's focused on finding the people with whom he'd sent his son, Johnny. As Ted starts to berate him and say that he can't do that if he's dead, Dick spots a man in a trenchcoat, just like the one he'd handed Johnny to. In the hysteria of the crowd they lose sight of that man, and it is revealed that Henry King Jr. (Brainwave), Todd Rice (Obsidian), Jonni Thunder were in fact there, but trying to avoid the men. Obsidian remarks that they were almost spotted; Brainwave says that they won't be a problem, but doesn't want any interference with their plan.
Back in the command room, Sato and Steel continue to monitor the global destruction, until something breaks through the ceiling of the room, something that seems like a mass of wires and technology.
Over in Amazonia, on the World Army launch pad, Jimmy radios to Dr. Crane, saying that Apokolips has resumed its assault. Jimmy tells him that he needs to get off the rocket and launch pad and launch, but Crane says he needs more time, or it won't succeed. Jimmy responds that Apokolips' satellites are already starting to restrict the planet's orbit, and they need to go. Crane decides to stay near the rocket and watch take-off from there, given that he can simply be put into another robot body. Having interfaced with the rocket, they begin countdown as inside the rocket Mister Miracle, Fury, Mister Terrific (Michael Holt) and Sandman (Wesley Dodds) prepare for ignition. Terrific shouts that they're off to save the world again, as the rocket takes off.
On the Earth's surface above Atom's Haven, the planet burns. Val Zod (Superman II), Kara Zor-El (Power Girl), and Lois Lane (Red Tornado) are taken aback by the horror of the sights. Lois notes that they need to hold their ground until the World Army's next evac comes to bring the remaining people to safety. Kara flies up to attack one of the incoming Apokoliptonian satellites.
From Dr. Crane's Lab in Amazonia, Jimmy remotely pilots the rocket, noting that they've reached the perimeter of the Generation Ship that Terry Sloan (Mister Eight) had hidden at the Lagrange Point between Earth and the sun. Just as they get in range, they set off a series of tick mines. Jimmy works on taking out the mines, but they're too quick and little to properly target. As the rocket explodes, Miracle and Fury each grab a human and fly the rest of the way to the ship, the Endurance. Miracle says that likely the vacuum of space will kill Sandman and Terrific; Fury says she thinks they are more resilient than that.
Back above Earth, Lois, Val, and Kara inspect the bizarre satellite. Kara suspects it is a superweapon. Using his X-ray vision, Val says it is actually a terraforming tool, and seems like it is going to be used to prepare the planet to be consumed.
Over the ruins of New York City, a World Army jet flies Huntress (Helena Wayne) and Batman II (Thomas Wayne) to a building. The pilot tells them they need to be very quick with whatever they're going to do. As the two drop to the building, Helena notes that she suspects Terry Sloan will have information on whatever it is that Bruce (Batman I) had entrusted to Oliver Queen (Green Arrow). They break into the building via rooftop entrance, and make their way into the building, where Thomas guesses that they need to crack Sloan's computer to get the info. Helena cautions Thomas, as she suspects Sloan has the building booby-trapped. Right then, a machine gun pops up from the floor of the office building hallway and fires at them. They take cover and Huntress fires an explosive arrow, destroying the trap. Hearing a noise, they turn and look out the window, and see Apokolips razing the planet.
