Quote1 Out of my way, Jor-El! Thanks to your experiments, I somehow gained new powers in space — and I honor you with the first sample of those powers! Quote2

Ed-Ilv was a ruthless career criminal on Krypton who secretly replaced his twin brother, Nali, on Jor-El's first experimental prison capsule; and briefly feigned superpowers as the ill-fated Nali-Ilv.

As a graduate of the Kandor Advanced Learning Center, Jor-El and Jax-Ur built a prototype prison capsule, which Ed's brother Nali-Ilv volunteered for, as he was serving a long custodial sentence.[1]

After losing telemetry for a few moments, "Nali-Ilv"'s prison ship crashed back at the Space Centre and a suddenly super-powered Kryptonian emerged from the wreckage and began a one-man crime spree. Though he claimed to be Nali-Ilv, that man was actually Nali's twin Ed-Ilv.[2]

Ed and Nali's crime-lord, Tron-Et, had won his seat on the Science Council by demonstrating a matter dissolver[3], which Tron-Et had secretly used to disintegrate Nali and his ship, and replaced them with Ed-Ilv in a matching ship.[2]

Jor-El quickly deduced that Ed-Ilv's "superpowers" came from one of his own inventions - the Anti-Gravity Belt, and countered with a belt of his own. Once debunked, Ed-Ilv was easily captured by Jor-El, and the angry criminal turned in Tron-Et, the killer of his brother. While Tron-Et was subsequently launched into space in a prison capsule, it is unknown what became of Ed-Ilv.[1]

Powers

  • Flight: (Hoax): Ed-Ilv used an anti-gravity belt to feign flight.
  • Superhuman Strength: (Hoax): Using an Anti-Gravity Belt, Ed-Ilv reduced the mass of objects he carried to give the appearance of super strength.

Abilities

  • Deception: Ed-Ilv faked superpowers and took the place of his brother Nali-Ilv, though it is unknown if he could pretend to be anyone but his twin brother.
  • Thievery: Both Ed-Ilv and his brother Nali were career criminals.

Weaknesses

  • Technological Reliability: It was only the Anti-Gravity Belt that gave Ed-Ilv the appearance of powers. Once Jor-El deduced this, Ed-Ilv was essentially beaten.

Mock Prison Capsule

  • This version of Ed-Ilv, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the Dark Crisis of 2022-2023. Even though other versions of the character may have appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
  • Soon after Ed-Ilv's "super-powered" debut and capture, the criminal Ha-Kor was in a position where he would be punished in a prison capsule, but only if he did not expose his gang-leader. Considering that Ed-Ilv did reveal the Tron-Et as his leader, it follows that Ed was most likely not punished severely.
