Elizabeth Arkham

Elizabeth Arkham was the mother of Amadeus Arkham, the founder of the infamous Arkham Asylum. For years, she had illusions that she was being tormented by a supernatural creature, and called her son to protect her. One day he finally saw the monster who plagued her; a great bat, and subconsciously, he chose to block the truth and used a razor to cut her throat and free her from her suffering. He then blocked his memory and attributed her death to suicide.

Elizabeth Arkham was created by Len Wein, Grant Morrison, and Dave McKean, first appearing in Arkham Asylum: A Serious House on Serious Earth (1989).
