Patchwork was a member of the Creature Commandos.

Early in WWII, a very tall and extremely strong young Marine, Pvt. Elliot "Lucky" Taylor, was nearly killed by a land mine, then was surgically reconstructed and experimented upon by Doctor Mazursky's team of surgeons and other specialists at Project M, thus was artificially turned into an almost-indestructible patchwork ogre. His vocal chords were destroyed in the process.

Although a U.S. Marine, Pvt. Taylor served in an experimental Army commando unit known as the Creature Commandos, alongside two other surgically-altered soldiers, Sgt. Vincent Velcro and Pvt. Warren Griffithr, under the command of Lt. Matthew Shrieve.
