Elmo was a stray dog, rescued by scientist Darrel Dane, who was secretly the superhero known as Doll Man.
History
The sickly, starving dog was taken in by Dane and exposed to an experimental ray device, which massively enhanced Elmo's strength, size, vitality, and intellect. The dog seemed to understand spoken English perfectly, and was capable of planning, and even trickery. Elmo soon became Doll Man's partner in his war on crime.[1]

- This version of Elmo the Wonder Dog, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–1986 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the 2022-2023 Dark Crisis event. Even though other versions of the character may have appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
