The Empire of Shadows is an alternate version of the League of Shadows from a Dark Multiverse world where they conquered the entire Earth.

History

The Empire of Shadows has been growing for over a thousand years. They have total dominion over every aspect of society; backed by advanced technology, a form of magic unknown in the positive Multiverse and armies of Lazarus-enhanced unkillable soldiers. The Batman of their universe chose to join the Empire, married Talia al Ghul and succeeded Ra's al Ghul as leader to his dominion.[1] The Empire spread across many worlds in the Dark Multiverse.[2]

Three of the Empire's lieutenants; the children of the Demon's Head, crushed the last embers of resistance on their Earth. The youngest of them, Janan al Ghul, presented a gift to her parents in the form of a whole other Multiverse to violate and plunder in the name of the al Ghul's notion of peace through a downed Fuginaut she'd captured.

They planned to invade Earth 0 using an interdimensional transporter built from the cosmic guardian's remains, and although it died before the Empire could mobilize their forces, they forced it to send a distress call to Earth 0 to lure a hero to their world who could create the portal they needed. When the Authority came to the Empire's corner of the Dark Multiverse to stop them, Janan kidnapped The Enchantress and used her to open a portal to Earth 0. Janan and Saif al Ghul crossed over but were repelled by their father's counterpart in the positive matter reality, alongside a suspiciously similar hero named Midnighter, who rescued June Moon and sent them back to their own native dimension.[1]

As a result of the Authority's actions, the Empire lost their ability to travel across realities. Their conquered alternate worlds were retaken by the people of that world, and they even faced rebellions in their own reality. The rebellion was eventually crushed, but all the al Ghuls besides Janan al Ghul were killed.[2]

Janan al Ghul found another way to cross dimensions by utilising the spirits of Etrigan and Bloodwynd. She attempted to invade Earth 0 but was defeated by the Superman Family. The two hellspawn sealed the portal between the universes and Etrigan dragged her down into Hell for enslaving them, effectively ending the Empire.[3]
