Engine City is the name ascribed to any number of massive terraforming projects perpetuated by the galactic conqueror Mongul.
History
Main article: Reign of the Supermen
Several years ago, Mongul brought his Warworld planetoid into Earth's orbit and launched hundreds of sphere-shaped bombs that "seeded" Coast City, California, slaughtering in excess of seven-million inhabitants. The seeds spawned a new city to emerge in its place - a city that served as an engine for what Mongul hoped would soon become the next Warworld. Allying himself with Hank Henshaw, the so-called "Man of Tomorrow", Mongul planned on producing a similar effect in Metropolis. At this time, Superman returned from the dead (after having been killed in battle with Doomsday) and massed an attack against Mongul along with Supergirl, the teenage clone Superboy, the "Man of Steel" John Henry Irons and the Eradicator. Coast City's former protector Hal Jordan was likewise present and together they succeeded in defeating Mongul and destroying Engine City. The overall cost however was astronomical, and the destruction of Coast City proved instrumental in allowing the entity of Fear known as Parallax to take root in Jordan's psyche. Immediately following Engine City's destruction, reconstruction plans for Coast City went into effect and took years to complete.
