When characters from Bird's comic began manifesting as actual people in Pacific City, his fan base grew and teenagers across the West Coast grew into a coalition of devoted, cultish followers. They worshiped Bird as some sort of guru and believed that there were hidden meanings in his comics. The Enigmatics made headline news in Pacific City when a congregation of more than three-hundred members took their own lives in a mass suicide pact outside the city Opera House.
