Etta Candy is a member of the US Armed Forces and was an agent of A.R.G.U.S., closely working with Steve Trevor. She is also Wonder Woman's best friend.
History
Early Career
The bold and brassy Etta O. Candy[1] was one of Wonder Woman's first true friends in Man's World along with Steve Trevor.
Year One
The then Lieutenant Candy of the US Navy welcomed Steve Trevor's return from the hidden Paradise Island brought in an invisible jet by the Amazon princess Diana, mourning Steve's dead colleagues in the crash of a Navy plane on the island shot down by the Sear Group when they went to a certain location to investigate the origin of the Maru Virus that was used by the terrorist organization. Determined to understand the mysterious foreigner, she contacted Dr. Perez to translate what she was saying, which was not much help, and then she called the professor and archaeologist Dr. Barbara Ann Minerva, who finally managed to communicate with Diana in a language she could understand. In a short time a bond was forged between Diana, Etta, Barbara and Steve, which would remain for the following years.
Etta Candy's feelings leaned towards Barbara Minerva. But while Barbara reciprocated Etta's feelings, including sharing an admiration for the work of the poet Sappho of Lesbos,[6] their relationship would be doomed by Dr. Minerva's transformation into Wonder Woman's arch-enemy, the Cheetah.[7]
New 52
Etta Candy later worked as the secretary of Steve Trevor, who revealed to her that he was still in love with Wonder Woman.[8]
During Forever Evil, Etta was in the ruins of Washington, D.C.'s A.R.G.U.S. headquarters. Trevor returned and Etta told him that the destruction was caused by a massive spike in Doctor Light's body. Later, she was approached by an energy manifestation of Doctor Light.[9]
DC Rebirth
The Lies
The now Commander Candy responded directly to Director Sasha Bordeaux within A.R.G.U.S. and used to remotely command field actions by special teams often led by her friend Master Chief Steven Trevor.[1]
Suspecting Bordeaux's actions, she began a parallel investigation, which led her to discover that Bordeaux was actually a spy android in the service of Dr. Veronica Cale. Candy managed to destroy this fake Bordeaux, but was threatened by Dr. Cale, who ordered her two killer dogs, Fear and Terror, to kill her.[10]
The Truth
Candy survived the attack by Dr. Cale's dogs, recovering in a hidden location in New York City with the company of Dr. Minerva. When Steve Trevor came to visit her, he found that the two had established an intimate relationship. However, with Diana incapacitated due to a mental breakdown because she discovered that the life she had known in Themyscira was a lie, Candy, Minerva and Trevor were threatened by Dr. Cale's Godwatch, forcing Minerva to return to this former group of her, while Candy went with Trevor in search of a Wonder Woman's old friend, the minotaur Ferdinand, to reinforce their defenses.[11]
Cale ordered Colonel Maru's Team Poison to ambush Minerva's friends to force her to accept being the Cheetah again as part of the plan to find Themyscira's hidden location. Seeing Etta, Steve and Ferdinand under attack, Minerva saw no alternative but to submit to Cale's will. When the attack ceased, Etta understood what happened to Barbara, which made her cry since she always defended her before Steve, saying that she would never sell them to Godwatch.[12]
With Diana recovered thanks to Ferdinand's help, the two of them and Etta and Steve broke into the Empire Enterprises building, Godwatch headquarters, in search of Cale and Maru to rescue Barbara, but neither was there. They faced a hologram of Doctor Cyber, which expressed the reasons why they acted against Wonder Woman, but Etta was determined to shut her up, giving Ferdinand the command to destroy the computers that generated the hologram, although it did not "kill" "Cyber. But the invasion was not lost at all: they discovered the real Sasha Bordeaux unconscious there, who was kept alive to be replicated as a spy android.[13]
Godwatch
After they managed to find their way to Themyscira and Diana to learn the truth about the lies implanted in her mind about her entire life, the only thing left, according to Etta, was to have Barbara back. Despite Steve's protests, Etta blamed Diana for losing her, but Diana promised her that it wouldn't happen again, and went after Veronica Cale. At Dr. Cale's house, Diana finds Cheetah almost killing her, seeking revenge for forcing her to be that human flesh-eating beast again, and also because Cale was the only person in the world who could reverse Minerva's condition, which she no longer wanted. After saving Cale, Diana tried to bring Barbara back to her senses, begging her to return to Etta. However, in sadness Barbara replies to Diana that Etta should forget the past, as she had fully embraced her fate as Cheetah.[14]
