Eugenie Hedstrom was a science fiction writer and winner of the Hugo and Nebula awards. She often wrote about people with amazing devices grafted inside their bodies. She was also well known for her nonfiction works, mostly European histories, including The Rise of Western Civilization. During her research for these books, she encountered the name of Vandal Savage many times. Wally West read many of her books while he was a college student.

She was in need of a heart transplant, and was hooked up to a Jarvic 7 artifical pump in Seattle. A heart was available for her, but it was at St. Mary's Children's Hospital in Manhattan, and a severe storm was preventing flights from landing in Seattle. Wally West was brought in to carry the heart cross-country to save her.
