Synopsis for "The Curse!"

Cyrus Gold remembers his life. His father moved to Gotham City, and, hoping to start a self-fulfilling prophecy, changed the family name to “Gold.” But his father died penniless, and whatever charity was left in Cyrus Gold died with him. He resigned to pursue wealth at any cost. He admits to himself that he was a corrupt, sadistic, sociopath while he was alive and made many enemies any one of whom would gladly have killed him. He is not sure who killed him, but now he asks, “who murdered Cyrus Gold?”

After that, Cyrus Gold remembers other lives and deaths. First, he recalls his earliest incarnation, that he rose from the swamp confronted heroes and died in the green light. Second, he recalls rising again from the swamp, this time traveling to Opal City where he encountered a yellow light, soft and welcoming like the man who bore it. The light only made him weak and, again, he felt death. Third, he recalls Batman and a scientist called Woodrue, and a creature once known as Holland. He plotted as he had when he lived, obsessed with survival and absurd, impossible plans. This time, he burned, dying in the light.

With this, Cyrus Gold emerges from Slaughter Swamp. For the first time, he has reanimated in his mortal form, not as Solomon Grundy. Wandering the streets of Gotham for the first time in almost a century, he experiences memories of his past life, including killing his own uncle. With these memories, comes a voice in his mind reciting the rhyme, “Buried . . . Born on a Sunday . . .” As the memories and the voice threaten to unravel his sanity, a woman approaches him, offering to take him to a religious shelter. When she tells him that God can fill his heart, he snaps, renouncing God and attacking her. Gotham City Police defend the woman, but he attacks them as well. They shoot him and he runs into the street where he is hit by a car and killed. However, he later reanimates as Solomon Grundy. Desperate, Grundy seeks shelter in the sewers, but is ambushed by Killer Croc. The clash between the two monsters only ends when Grundy breaks Croc's jaw.

Later, Grundy goes to a graveyard. There, as the sun rises, he turns back into Cyrus Gold. He finds a gravestone with the name Cyrus Gold, born in 1863 and died in 1895. He is immediately found by Green Lantern and the Phantom Stranger. It seems the nature of Solomon Grundy is changing, and Green Lantern has been drafted to help him turn his curse to the greater good. Although Green Lantern is hesitant to help, Phantom Stranger insists: there is a night of pure darkness coming, and it would be best if Solomon Grundy was not around when it happens.
