Father Time is the commander of the Super Human Advanced Defense Executive (S.H.A.D.E.), a counter-disaster organization.

He possess the power to be reborn in a new body on New Year's Day to accompany the new year. Prior to the Infinite Crisis, Time approached Frankenstein about hiring him on as a monster-hunter, and participated in the outskirts of the fight against the Sheeda invasion. At the time, he took the form of a young black man in a suit, bowler hat and domino mask.

When Checkmate was disavowed by the American government, S.H.A.D.E. gained a new mandate, with Father Time still in the lead. During the metahuman event known as World War III, Time led a S.H.A.D.E. mission against a rampaging Black Adam; however, Time had his face ripped off by Black Adam.[1] While recuperating from a hospital bed, he metamorphoses into a new form: an older white man with flowing white hair and a solid build. This ability saved his life and he returned to work.

A year after the Infinite Crisis, Time was in command of S.H.A.D.E. operations in Bludhaven as well as running a secret metahuman research program and conscripting people who had gained superhuman mutations from Chemo. Opposed by the Atomic Knights, the Teen Titans, and Monolith, he moved onto a new plan: to create a new team of Freedom Fighters. Initially working for him against the interests of the people, they turned on him when sent after Uncle Sam, who told them about Time's grand scheme: mind-control RFID tags with which he planned to create a truly stable and harmonious society. Time himself was forced to work with the Freedom Fighters against his plan when Gonzo the Mechanical Bastard betrayed him with the intention of using the mind-controlled citizens of the USA to wage total war on the world.[2] After the heroes' victory, Father Time caught up to Gonzo, turned him into a pair of sunglasses using tehnology stolen from the Atomic Knights, and took a squadron of S.H.A.D.E. soldiers with him into the timestream, from which he planned to act as a "bogeyman", forcing the government to turn control of the main S.H.A.D.E. organization over to the Freedom Fighters - which had apparently been his plan all along.[3]

The stream of events after this is unclear, but after the Freedom Fighters broke up, Father Time quietly reassumed control of S.H.A.D.E. in the runup to the Final Crisis. He also appears to have returned to a form similar to the one in which he met Frankenstein. He sent Frankenstein to investigate the Dark Side Club and was guarding the U.S. President at a secure location around the time the tide turned.
