Synopsis for "What's Bred in the Bone"
In the past, Granny Goodness kills Darkseid's mother Heggra, but receives a boon from the dying woman in the form of the Book of Bloodlines. Still in the past, Granny delivers Orion to the New Gods, and in return she collects Scott Free for Darkseid; who is desperate to find the Book of Bloodlines.
In the present day Big Barda is furious with Scott but he reminds her of a time years ago when the two of them were children subjected to Granny's torture in the Terror Orphanage. The two helped each other out of the devious and dangerous traps that had been laid out for them - it was her performance at these tasks which highlighted Barda to Granny, and she invited Barda to join her Furies. After remembering this Barda and Scott are surrounded by Willik's soldiers but Barda allows enough time for Scott to escape, inadvertently ending the peace treaty signed between Darkseid and Highfather. The end of the treaty forces Granny into action and she secrets the Book of Bloodlines with Tigra who looks after an infant Lump.
Granny discovers Barda's actions from Lashina, but Barda had already gone to Willik because she needs a man to sign her complaint form. But Willik takes his men's side without question, and Barda is forced to work on the fields as a penance. Granny informs Darkseid about Scott's escape and they conspire to use Barda to find him.
Granny finds Barda in the shower after her time on the field, she demands that Barda apologise to Willik and to atone for her dishonoring of the Furies. Willik immediately puts Barda to the same "training practise" that he forced Aurelie through, though Barda will stand for none of his antics. Infuriated by his blackmailing Barda storms into Darkseid's throne room and confesses to Rublon's murder. Darkseid is impressed.
Barda is sent back to the Furies to lead but Lashina refuses and the two scuffle leading to Barda escaping, but Lashina had left a tracker on her before she went. Granny gives the Furies their next mission, track down Barda and kill Scott.
