Ferrin Colos is a member of the intergalactic police force Darkstars.

Origin

Long ago, Colos lived on the planet Zamba, a world torn apart by the Qinorri Raiders. Being a peaceful race, Colos' people couldn't defend themselves against the Raiders, and he was among the few survivors. Eventually, a Darkstar named Vardan Radz offered Colos the chance to fight back and prevent what happened to Zamba from ever happening anywhere else. Colos became a Darkstar, following Radz's footsteps and being passionate about his job. However, becoming a Darkstar meant to abandon the peaceful ways of his race, so he was exiled from Zamba.[1]

Eventually, Colos suffered a turning point on the planet Jenuwyne, where he faced raiders more savage than the Qinorri and failed to protect the natives. That failure marked him, and Colos tried his best to put that history in the past.[2] Despite that failure, Colos continued with his job, even though he lost all passion and enthusiasm for it.

Assigned to Earth

Prigatz assigned Colos to chase some aliens that had a drug ring on Earth. These smugglers turned out to be more than Colos expected, becoming the criminal organization known as the Synidicate. With the help of two Earthmen, detective John Flint and Mo Douglas, Colos succeeded in stopping the drug ring and destroying their factory. Prigatz was so satisfied with his results that he officially assigned Colos to stay and patrol on Earth.[3]

As per NEMO regulations, which allows Darkstars to pick two native deputies, Colos recruited Flint and Mo to join him on his patrol and gave them their own Exo-Mantles. During their next missions, Flint had trouble following the chain of command, rushing into battle despite Colos' orders to stand down and wait. Ferrin had to assert his authority in repeated occasions, which eventually led to Flint resigning from being a deputy.[4]

Shortly after, Colos met who would become his third deputy: Carla White, who was kidnapped by the Syndicate and taken off-world. The Darkstars (with the help of Hawkman and Hawkgirl) rescued the slaves and took them back to Earth. Colos was surprised by Carla's hopefulness and determination to lead the inmates to rise against their keepers.[2] That feeling toward her increased after the battle against the mercenary K'lassh, when Carla put on Mo's Exo-Mantle (who was wounded during the fight) and saved Colos from the killer.[5]. Eventually, Colos praised Carla's courage and recruited her as deputy to replace Flint.[6]

Green Lantern

Although they share the same line of work, Ferrin Colos always had a very low opinion about the Green Lanterns, and being assigned to the home planet one of them was stationed on didn't help. At some point, Colos crossed paths with Hal Jordan when Eobard Thawne, disguised as the Flash, started to wreak havoc in Central City. Colos chased the rogue speedster, and Hal tried to defend his "irrational friend." The confrontation ended with Flash pretending to be killed. Colos also questioned Green Lantern about the Mosaic World on Oa and all the cities stranded there, something the Green Lantern Corps attempted to keep secret.[7]

A distress signal led Ferrin Colos and his deputies to a crisis on the planet Maltus, where they received orders from the Controllers to prevent anyone from attacking the Triarch. This orders meant opposing Green Lantern. However, Colos ignored them and decided to join forces with Hal Jordan to avenge his fallen comrades and save Maltus. Shortly after, even more Darkstars arrived on the planet to enforce the Controllers' orders, and Colos had to oppose his brothers.[8] However, the Darkstars stopped fighting each other when they learned that the Triarch weren't actually gods, but artificial being created by the rogue Controller Daalon. Thus, they decided to join forces with the Green Lantern Corps to avert the crisis.[9] In the aftermath of the crisis, Ferrin Colos and Hal Jordan recognized each other as equals.[10]

However, that trust was broken when Hal Jordan became Parallax and destroyed the Green Lantern Corps. Colos joined Guy Gardner on a team to fight the renegade, but they were defeated and sent back to Earth.[11]

Court-Martial

Back on Earth, Colos had to deal with another threat from the Syndicate, who this time kidnapped and turned John Flint into a mutant with the Annihilator 171 procedure.[12] Luring him into a trap, the Syndicate forced Colos to fight his former friend.[13] However, Colos managed to talk some sense into Flint, and they escaped from the Syndicate.[14]

Colos's next test of loyalty came when Huvah Jeddigar ordered the detention and execution of the Darkstar Merayn Dethalis for stealing a weapon. Colos had a close relationship with Merayn, so he had second thoughts while carrying out that mission. However, the pursuit suffered a quick turn when the Darkstars learned Merayn didn't steal a weapon. She was framed by Jeddigar to keep his secret operations from being discovered.[15]

Following the situation with Merayn Dethalis, Colos lied about not seeing the fugitive on Earth. However, Jeddigar learned the truth, and Colos faced court-martial. After a questionable trial, Jeddigar declared him guilty, and Colos was kicked out of the Darkstars. His replacement was announced right after the trial: the former Titan Donna Troy would become Earth's Darkstar.[16] In time, Colos managed to convince a bunch of fellow Darkstars, including the rookies Donna Troy and John Stewart, to rise against Jeddigar. Bringing the battle directly to him, Colos forced Jeddigar to retreat, which caused both of them to be sent to another universe.[17]

Redemption

In that pocket universe, Colos met his doppelganger, who was the tyrant ruler of the Darkstars. He also met a good version of Jeddigar, who was a rebel in opposition of the tyrant's regime.[18] With the help of the rebels, Ferrin found the Jenuwynians he failed to save in his universe, who were stripped from their planet and sent to that pocket dimension. This time, armed with a more powerful exo-suit, Ferrin fred the Jenuwynians from enslavement and brought them back to their planet, redeeming himself and giving closure to a dark chapter in his life.[19]

Following John Stewart's orders, Colos was one of the few survivors in the battle against Grayven on Ranagar. Injured, John left the Darkstars after that battle. Colos and the three remaining Darkstars -Chaser Bron, Munchukk, and Galius Zed- stayed on Rann to help rebuild the city.[20]
