Synopsis for "Picking Up the Pieces"

After killing Guy Gardner and Martian Manhunter, Superman tries to escape from the military forces to prevent more killing. The battle escalates with the intervention of Captain Atom, Firestorm, and the Doom Patrol. But the constant attacks drive Superman crazy, and he lets out a scream that decimates and kills everything and everyone around him. After the explosion, Superman realizes he's on the moon now, and Wonder Woman appears with Green Kryptonite, saying that it's time for him to pay. Disturbed, he grabs the Kryptonite, ready to put an end to the nightmare.

Suddenly, the Kryptonite starts talking to Superman, and the voice identifies itself as the Nasa, communicating from Houston control. This makes him wake up from the hallucination and remembers the Nasa tasked him to the moon to investigate some radioactive anomalies. Superman discovers a living being in the form of a red crystal, who explains they got stranded on the moon centuries ago looking for suitable planets to live in, but the solar activity prevented their departure. They used the radiation bands to send distress signals, and when Superman arrived, they tried communicating with him. But they were unable to understand his mind, and this telepathic communication drove him berserk, making him see all those nightmarish hallucinations and tear the lunar surface. Superman helps to dig up this red glass, permitting them to depart from the moon, and he returns to Earth, relieved and determined to overcome his fears.
