Alexander the Great was inspired by the king of Macedon to build an empire, but was stopped by Hawkman.

History

By the time Alexander the Great made his premiere strike against mankind, he had already achieved some renown as a physicist, though he was considered to be a maverick by his peers for working outside of commonly-accepted lines. Believing himself destined to become a great conqueror, he took the name of the legendary historical figure Alexander the Great for himself and concocted a plan to bend modern society to his own will. Towards this end, he invented a machine whose rays could apparently increase the amount of mass in anything that they touched, causing those objects to weigh far more than they normally did. In actuality, it would appear that his machine's rays interacted with the pull of gravitational forces on those objects they affected, which created the same effect.

With this machine, Alexander attempted to blackmail the inhabitants of Manhattan. Several skyscrapers in New York City were made to collapse, killing and injuring an unknown number of New York's citizens. The plot was ultimately foiled by Hawkman, and in his battle with the villain, Hawkman stabbed Alexander with a Roman-style trident.

It was believed at the time that Alexander had perished from his injuries. However, he recovered and appeared again later, this time working for Ian Karkull with an assortment of other villains. Karkull sent Alexander to Texas to destroy a hotel and its occupants, but he was stopped by by Hawkman and Hawkgirl. (Unknown to Alexander, his ultimate target was future president Lyndon Johnson.) Alexander was captured and presumably turned over to the police.

• This gravity-inducing technology is ineffective against Ninth Metal; Hawkman himself explained that "Alexander's machine multiplies the atomic energy of objects and the Ninth Metal has no such energy in its makeup".

Notes

• This version of Alexander the Great, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the Dark Crisis of 2022-2023. Even though other versions of the character may have appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
• Various post-Crisis stories (including Green Lantern Corps Quarterly #1 and JSA #7– #9) have made it clear that some version of the story from All-Star Squadron Annual #3 still happened in post-Crisis continuity. However, none of those references or retellings have shown that Alexander the Great is still a part of the story, so he is not confirmed to be a New Earth character.
