Stephanie Brown wakes in an ambulance. Once told that they are taking her to West Mercy, where her mother works in the ER, she gives her name as “Fay Wray.” This alerts Oracle, who sets off the airbags and causes the driver to crash the ambulance on the icy road. Steph walks away, still concussed, and dons her Batgirl costume again. Robin catches her spying on Batman’s meeting with Commissioner Gordon and Detective Gage, and they fight until Batman breaks it up. He takes them both off the case.
Robin tells Batgirl she’s lucky to be alive because he was trained by the League of Assassins, but she was trained by Bruce Wayne and was trusted by him to operate solo; Robin is struck by the reference to his father and agrees to work with her, though he insists on taking point (despite not knowing where they’re going). They interrogate Jordanna Spence in her dorm room, and she tells them that Francisco wasn’t kidnapped for ransom—He was kidnapped as bait for Batman, whose own investigation has led him to Devil’s Square, where he is cut off from Oracle and attacked by Roxy Rocket, Riot, and Dr. Phosphorus. Stefano Gracia is a gambler who is deep in debt to Roulette; to make up for his losses, he agreed to participate in the setup so Batman can be killed in a pay-per-view event.
