Synopsis for "Old Friends, New Foes"
After his year-long absence, Hal Jordan returns to Ferris Aircraft, where he reunites with his old friends. Upon arriving at the recently expanded branch of Ferris at Los Angeles, Hal saves Rich Davis from a deadly accident. Rich thanks him and is surprised to see his friend again, but when Hal walks away, he thinks to himself and complains about Hal always spoiling things.
Carol then takes Hal to show him Clay Kendall's experiment with psionics, in an attempt to boost the brain activity of humans. Carol insists the reluctant Hal to try the experiment by moving a paper plane with his mind. Hal succeeds, but he excuses himself saying that it was a "breeze" that moved the plane, leaving the scientists confused.
Meanwhile, the hired villain Javelin hijacks a truck driving to Ferris Aircraft and steals the engine they were transporting. He then contacts his men to pick up the cargo.
Hal and Carol continue the tour to the hangar, where he reunites with Tom Kalmaku and Bruce Gordon, testing an improved version of Bruce's solar jet. However, Carol gets a phone call, saying that the jet's engine has been stolen, and Hal runs out, secretly donning his Green Lantern suit and heading to the scene.
There, he follows the trace of some men riding flying bicycles carrying the engine. He confronts the hijackers, but Javelin interferes and lets the others escape. Green Lantern fights his new foe with relative ease, until one of the javelins covers him in yellow plastic, making his ring useless and causing him to fall to his imminent death.

Synopsis for "Progress!"
A Green Lantern is killed in battle and passes on his ring to a primitive native of the world he crashes on. The new Lantern uses his power to defend his world and advance its civilization, until he, too, dies in combat, repeating the process with his new successor.
