Synopsis for "Manhunted, Part One: Mis-Trial by Fire"

Shadow-Thief starts with Merlyn by using his shadow tendrils to crush the life out of Merlyn. Kate tries to break free of Shadow-Thief's hold but she can't get close to her bo staff and Carl's deviant advances toward Kate make it harder for her to focus. She then activates a magnetic field on her gauntlet that causes her bo staff to come to her. Kate uses her bo staff to discharge energy right into Shadow-Thief's chest. Shadow-Thief reels in pain and Kate notices the gaping hole in his chest but his shadow powers heal his wound. Merlyn aims one of his explosive arrows at Shadow-Thief and asks Manhunter to team up in order to take down Shadow-Thief. Kate immobilizes Merlyn with her bo staff and tells him she doesn't make deals with cop killers. Firehawk shakes off Phobia's spell and combines her firepower with Kate's bo staff. They take down Shadow-Thief and leave him in a catatonic state. Unfortunately, Phobia and Merlyn got away when the authorities arrived on the scene. Calculator eventually sends Metallo undercover in order to run a scan on Shadow-Thief's condition. Calculator tells Metallo to stand down and not to eliminate Shadow-Thief. Calculator figures by sparing Shadow-Thief, Sands will be indebted to the Secret Society when they have need of him again.

That same day, Peter gives Ramsey a gift from Kate. Kate's gift is a signed autograph from Superman which cements Ramsey's newfound love for his mother. Peter then takes Ramsey to the Harbor View Park in Brentwood so he can play soccer with his friends. Ramsey leaves Peter's line of sight in order to grab the soccer ball. Ramsey bumps into his grandfather. Ramsey runs to his father when he hears Peter yelling for him. Ramsey explains that he was talking to his grandpa. Peter freaks out because he remembers what Kate told him about her father. Peter asks Ramsey to point his grandfather but he had already left. Peter calls Kate after the fiasco at the Shadow-Thief trial and asks her if she wants to accompany him and Ramsey to Legoland next Saturday.

Just as Peter had finished leaving his message, Ted Shoemaker, the paparazzi reporter who harassed Kate at the hospital, paid off Kate's super in order to gain access to her apartment. Shoemaker can't find anything incriminating in Kate's apartment except some irregular dust and dirt samples. Shoemaker takes the samples to a friend of his at Omnitech. Shoemaker's friend points out that the dust and dirt have been ionized by an unknown source.

Meanwhile, Richards' murderer enters a bar in Chicago called the Crypt and finds Chase Lawler, another former Manhunter like Dan Richards. The murderer befriends Lawler while he drinks away his depression because his musical career is going nowhere, his girlfriend is a meth addict and he is paying for a settlement lawsuit towards the victims of his last show who suffered severe burns from pyro effects. Lawler excuses himself to take a leak and the murderer places a tranquilizer in Lawler's drink. Lawler takes another sip of his drink and the drug kicks in. The murderer offers Lawler a ride home. Lawler wakes up battered and bruised in a warehouse. The murderer approaches Lawler and Lawler makes the determination from his costume that he is Dumas, a sworn enemy of the Manhunters. Dumas pulls out a buck knife and slices Lawler's throat.

On the other side of the country in Las Vegas, Mark Shaw heads to his apartment at the Flamingo Lagoon. Shaw goes for his mail and finds a note with a newspaper clipping. The clipping talks about how Dan Richards' body was found by a mailman. Richards' body was found staked up against the wall of his cabin with clippings of his former exploits as the Manhunter pinned around his body. When Shaw enters his apartment, he sees Lawler's corpse bleeding on his floor.
