Created about 20 years before the destruction of Krypton, by Jor-El, under orders from the Ruling Council. In the event of Krypton being destroyed, the Orb would create clones of those Kryptonians, whose DNA was stored within it (including Jor-El and Zod)

The Orb was a Kryptonian device that preserved DNA so it could create clones of important figures.

History

Created about 20 years before the destruction of Krypton, by Jor-El, under orders from the Ruling Council. In the event of Krypton being destroyed, the Orb would create clones of those Kryptonians, whose DNA was stored within it (including Jor-El and Zod), on Earth. However, fearing for the safety of humanity, Jor-El secretly blasted the Orb with Blue Kryptonite radiation (thus ensuring that any clone created by the Orb, would be powerless under a yellow sun).

Jor-El arranged for the Orb and three stones (that, when combined, would allow for the creation of Jor-El's Fortress of Knowledge) to be sent to Earth centuries ago via time portals. The main part of the Orb was hidden inside of a castle in Scotland, while a smaller piece was hidden elsewhere. At some point, the Orb became incorporated into the Legend of Naman/the Traveler, if not the cause of it. Some believers in the legend believed that the Orb would allow them to control the Traveler.

In 2008, both pieces of the Orb were discovered and united by Lex Luthor. Upon uniting them, the Orb projected a hologram, that showed Lex the location of the Fortress of Solitude. Lex traveled to the Fortress with the Orb, which forced Clark Kent to come there. While the Orb had been believed to grant a human control over the Traveler, in reality, Jor-El had programmed the Orb when placed on Fortress's console to revert the Fortress itself back into the Crystal of Knowledge and remove the powers of any Kryptonians present, leaving them powerless.

The Orb was eventually found by Tess Mercer, who it began to speak to and give instructions. After Doomsday was buried alive deep underneath Metropolis, the Orb finally fulfilled its original purpose and created hundreds of Kryptonian clones.

Notes

• What became of the orb following the creation of the Kryptonian clones is unknown. The last known holder was the younger clone created from General Zod, Major Zod.
  
  

Trivia

• On the commentary for "Kandor", the Orb is identified as the show's equivalent to the bottle city of Kandor.
