The Executioner is a legacy name used by several super-villains in the DC Universe, usually antagonists to the Batman Family in Gotham City. The original from the Golden Age was Willy Hooker, who adopted the vigilante identity of the Executioner to murder wanted criminals in order to claim the reward money. In reality, the Executioner himself was secretly responsible for breaking the criminals out of Gotham State Penitentiary in the first place. This version of the character served as an inspiration for other media versions of the Executioner, in which he was also portrayed as an evil vigilante who murders criminals. Executioner was created by Dick Sprang, first appearing in Detective Comics #191. (1953)
