Synopsis for "The Obtuse Conundrum"
Reluctantly, Tim Drake accompanies his friend Kip Kettering to a book signing involving the author Roman Rhoades. Tim spots an assassin and is able to push the author out of harms way. But because the rifle shot was fired with a silencer, nobody noticed it and Kip is angry because Tim ruined the signing session.
In the evening, Robin enters the hotel room of Roman Rhoades through a window. He confronts the author directly and tries to explain the assassination attempt. But Rhoades only laughs about it and does not take it seriously. But the second he leaves the room, the assassin breaks through the window with an axe in his hands. Robin is able to take the fight outside, but cannot prevent the killer from fleeing. It takes a third assassination attempt for Robin to defeat the man who is known as Wesley "Wild Wes" Cooley. This time Rhoades was present during the fight, but he still refuses to believe that somebody wants to see him dead.
Robin soon discovers that Rhoades is simply an actor posing as the author. Rhoades is blocking a profitable movie deal because he wants to act in these movies himself. That is the reason why the real author named Birch, publicist Elaine as well as his agent Hayden had hired the killer and now attempt to kill Rhoades themselves. Again, Robin is on the case and rescues Rhoades. As a thank-you gift Robin asks for a complete set of autographed first editions for his friend Kip ...
