Rol-Nac came from an unknown tyrannical world to experience a better life on Krypton; and in the process he saved Jor-El and Lara from a failing rocket-test.
History
In gratitude, they made Rol-Nac the Godfather of Kal-El and Rol actually named him, in the light of Rao.
Very poor timing lead Rol-Nac to return to Krypton only to see the cataclysm, and watch as baby Kal-El was launched towards Earth. When Rol finally caught up with Kal; he was intercepted by The Marauder and temporarily brainwashed to play the part of a mock Satan and vie for Superman's soul, though that was short lived because the threat he posed to his God-son broke his conditioning.
His later fate is unknown.

- This version of Rol-Nac, including all history and corresponding appearances, was erased from existence following the collapse of the original Multiverse in the 1985–86 Crisis on Infinite Earths event and later restored following the rebirth of the infinite Multiverse during the Dark Crisis of 2022-2023. Even though other versions of the character may have appeared, this information does not apply to those versions.
Trivia
Rol-Nac's first appearance in Action Comics #378 concludes with the editorial note: "You'll be seeing more of Rol-Nac... Very soon." In reality, he was only seen one more time; in a Flashback ten years later."
