Superman Family #188 is an issue of the series Superman Family (Volume 1) with a cover date of April, 1978.

Synopsis for Jimmy Olsen: "Crisis in Kandor!"

Superman and Jimmy Olsen take a vacation in Kandor and witness an election for the Science Council. The good times are cut short as separatists, advocating life outside the Kandor bottle, take Van-Zee's family hostage which forces the new Nightwing and Flamebird to side temporarily with the radicals.

In the midst of the riots, Superman and Jimmy put on their old Nightwing and Flamebird costumes, and battle their replacements until peace is restored. It's short-lived, as separatists used the violence as a cover to find Van-Zee's enlarging gas. Now, giants walk the streets of Kandor.

Synopsis for Nightwing & Flamebird: "Here There Be... Giants!"

The two pairs of Nightwings and Flamebirds fight the giant Separatists, who have been given great size by enlarging gas, but Van-Zee and Jimmy Olsen are taken captive. Sylvia demonstrates her Klurkor skills and attacks the Separatists holding her, briefly freeing herself and her children. Superman and Ak-Var manage to free their partners and immobilize the giants with an invention of Ak's. Despite his success in battle, Ak-Var does not win the election to the Science Council.

After a few moment's peace, Superman is told that his cousin Supergirl is on trial in Kandor.

Synopsis for Supergirl: "Kandor vs. Supergirl!"

Supergirl is returning to the Fortress of Solitude after leaving Klax-Ar at Kronis[1] when she is ordered to report to Kandor. Kara enters the Shrunken City via the Micro-wave Tunnel, but she's arrested as soon as she arrives. Kara tries to fight off the police, but she's knocked out and taken to the Kandorian detention center. When she awakens, she finds Superman, Jimmy Olsen, Van-Zee and Ak-var are visiting her in her cell.

Van-Zee explains that, as daughter of Kandorian residents she's subject to Kandor's laws, and someone has brought charges against her. Kara is taken to court, accompanied by her cousins and friends, and discovers it's Shyla Kor-Onn who is accusing her of illegal seizure and unlawful imprisonment within the Phantom Zone, since Supergirl tricked her back into the Zone even though her sentence was up.[2] Shyla claims Supergirl was jealous of her, but Superman counters Kara acted in self-defense when Shyla attempted to steal her powers and kill her. The prosecution declares that he can prove Kara's criminal intent and produces a mento-tape.

Meanwhile, on Midvale, Zor-El is taking Fred Danvers to his office in the new S.T.A.R. Labs facility. Fred still needs an assistant, and he meets with up a candidate for the position.

Back on Kandor, Van-Zee explains that a mento-tape records memories that can be played later. Mento-tapes are considered irrefutable evidence. The prosecutor's mento-tape starts playing and Kara is shocked and then enraged when it shows her consorting with Lex Luthor.[3] However, Kara realizes she was having memory gaps at the time, so she cannot prove she is innocent.

Lex Luthor volunteered those memories years ago, but it wasn't until Shyla's release that further criminal evidence against Supergirl came to light. The prosecution contends that Supergirl returned Shyla to the Phantom Zone because Shyla discovered her criminal past. Supergirl decides to not contest the charges, and is sentenced to the Zone for thirty days. Superman insists on defending her innocence but Supergirl assures she knows what she is doing.

As the Phantom Zone Projector sends Supergirl into the Zone, a bodiless entity is watching the proceedings. She knows Supergirl is planning something, but it is sure that Earth will be conquered before Supergirl's sentence is up.
