Synopsis for "The Last Days, Part Two"
After their attempt to save the people Galymayne fails, Superman and Superboy have escaped Galymayne's religious fanatics and reached Klain's laboratory. There, they listen to Klain's story. He and his wife were among the last scientists of Galymayne before they were eliminated by their religious brethren. Now, only Klain remains and he, like Jor-El before him, has built an experimental spacecraft in order to take his unborn children to a faraway planet, where they can live and hopefully rebuild their society.
Suddenly, the religious soldiers of Galymayne attack Klain's lab. In the ensuing fight, Klain is mortally wounded and his ship is damaged. Fortunately, Superman and Superboy are too far from Galymayne's main palace, meaning that the faith magic the high priest and his followers used to decrease their powers no longer works. With their strength restored, Superman defeats the intruders while Superboy takes Klain's children to the designated planet. Unfortunately, Klain dies, but not before expressing hope that he will see his wife again. Superman is amazed that Klain can still have religious faith and Klain replies that God, science and the truth can coexist if a person lets them.
Some time later, Superman returns to the high priest and asks him one last time for permission to save the people of Galymayne. The planet is about to die but Superman can take the people who choose to live to another planet they can call home. Even so, the priest claims that the people of Galymayne fully believe in Dhermet's will and Dhermet has dictated Galymayne's destruction, so be it. Superman says that maybe Dhermet brought him to Galymayne so that he could save its peope and the high priest entertains that possibility but stands by his choice. As the planet dies around them, Superman and the high priest reach a mutual understanding and express respect for each other's beliefs. Moments later, Galymayne and its people die in a massive explosion.
Superman makes his escape and meets up with Superboy who witnessed Galymayne's destruction from an asteroid. Superboy feels guilty, not only for failing to save the planet but for finding some measure of beauty in a planet's faith. Superman, however, says it is only natural to find beauty in tragedy. Superboy asks if his father believes in God, Rao or something similar but Superman admits that he has discovered many things in his adventures and while it is is important to believe in something, that "something" should not become "everything". Having become wiser from their experience, Superman and Superboy make their way home.
