The Fire Mountain Country in the Andes of South America was the site of an incredible scientific break-through in geothermal energy, and also the scene of a conflict between the developer of that invention, who was an insane murderer, and the Blackhawk Squadron.

History

In a volcanic region amid the Andes, somewhere south of the Equator, is the Fire Mountain Country. In this remote area, renegade scientist Gant Martek established an experimental energy project, tapping into geothermal power. He had taken up residence in a large Inca step-pyramid, and set up his equipment inside it. Martek also murdered each of his three scientist brothers, Luke, Avery, and Winston, who were also working on similar energy development projects.

In this region lived a tribe of hulking neanderthalish beast men. With his fire-making devices, six-shooter, and other modern technology, Martek seemed virtually godlike to these people, and they now followed and obeyed him implicitly.

In 1948 the Blackhawk Squadron investigated the murders of the other three Gant brothers, and were thus led to South America. Their encounter with Gant Martek and his Beast Men was as first friendly, but Martek's ham-handed attempts to deceive them into leaving only aroused their suspicions. There was a melee, and the Blackhawks had little trouble in out-fighting the untrained primitives. Amid the fighting, Gant Martek and his giant henchman Grombo went over a cliff, and were both killed.

Notes

  • At the end of this story, Gant Martek's geothermal power machinery is abandoned, intact, for reputable scientists to find and develop. Also the tribe of cave men still live in the vicinity of the ruined temple.
