Firestorm (Volume 3) with a cover date of September, 2004. It was published on July 8, 2004.
Synopsis for "Empowered"
Firestorm grows extremely agitated when he discovers that he cannot split into Jason Rusch and Stevie Golek. Further, Stevie's disembodied consciousness inside the Firestorm matrix is slowly disintegrating. Stevie pressures Jason to find a way to separate themselves – fast!
Firestorm flies back towards the Gregson storage facility – the location where he first transformed into Firestorm. He believes that if he tries to separate at the origin point, he may prove successful. This however fails, and Stevie's essence continues to disappear.
Meanwhile, Stevie's mind perceives Jason's memories. He witnesses Jason's childhood and learns about the accident that took his father's arm. He finds that Jason grew up in a broken household and that his mother left him at a young age. Jason yells at Stevie to stop tormenting him, but Golek continues to egg him on.
Firestorm flies back towards downtown Detroit. He decides to relax his body and mind and tries to calmly separate himself. This tactic proves successful and Firestorm fissions back into Jason Rusch and Stevie Golek. However, Stevie's body has turned into a puddle of bubbling protomatter that drips down into a nearby sewer drain. Jason cannot understand why the separation killed Stevie.
Jason returns home. His father screams at him, demanding to know where he has been all night. Jason is too traumatized from his earlier experiences to speak about the matter.
