History
In pre-Columbian America, east of what is now the United States, the Indian Iroques Flying Stag, when riding for a championship to choose the new Royaneh (supreme chieftain of the Iroquois nations), falls into a trap made by three Indians who wanted the same title. He begs the Manitu spirit to help him out of that hole, and Manitu gives him an amulet made from a meteor, which gives him "the strength of a thousand bears, speed that surpasses the fastest of the deer, and jumping prowess that surpasses those of the wolf ". He manages to escape from the hole, and adopting a buffalo mask, creates the identity of Saganowahna, the Super-Chief, and winning the championship with his own prowess, becomes the new Royaneh. When situation demanded, he would adopt his masked identity and uses his skills to defend his people. Super-Chief can be considered the first American superhero. [1]
After his earthly life was over, Flying Stag began existence in an otherworldly paradise where he was accompanied by a pack of white wolves. Ralph Dibny and Doctor Fate encountered him during their tour of the mystical realms. During their visit, Jon Standing Bear, Flying Stag's descendent and successor to the role of Super-Chief, briefly appeared following his death. Flying Stag took the Manitou Stone back.
