Fort Charlotte massacre
Second Cavalry lieutenant Jonah Hex personally surrendered himself to the Union forces at Fort Charlotte when he could no longer in good conscience fight for the Southern army. Determining their enemy's position based on the mud on his boots, the Union easily captured Hex's entire unit in their sleep. The acting General at Charlotte publicly thanked Hex and gave him a monetary reward for the betrayal, to make his own men believe it had been intentional. Knowing that they could never feed all of the prisoners as their own supplies were already running low, the General conspired to slaughter them. Leaving Hex an opportunity to escape and set the men free, he set up Gatling guns and massacred the entire unit when they tried to escape. The few survivors spread word that Jonah Hex was a traitor, and his best friend Jeb Turnbull died in the shooting.
