The Freedom Fighters were a team of Golden Age superheroes, which, through multiple iterations and legacy-bearers of its members, persisted into the modern age of heroism.

History

In the Golden Age, the team included Uncle Sam, Doll Man, the Human Bomb, the Ray, the Red Bee, Plastic Man, the Jester,[1] and the Spider, overlapping in membership with the contemporary All-Star Squadron.[2]

A later incarnation of the Freedom Fighters, composed of Sam, Damage, the Black Condor, Phantom Lady, and a new Ray, suffered casualties in battle with the Secret Society of Super-Villains,[3] and fallen members Phantom Lady, the Condor, Uncle Sam, and the Human Bomb were buried in the superhero crypt Valhalla Cemetery.[4]

Another group of superhumans using the identities of Doll Man, the Human Bomb, Phantom Lady, and the Ray were gathered by a new Uncle Sam to serve the United States Government's Department of Homeland Security from a base of operations known as the Heartland.[5] The original Sam[4] and Bomb, along with the Black Condor, were later among those selected by Batman for his army of Black Lantern Ring-animated undead to fight the One Who Laughs.[6] A Freedom Fighters team which included the original Uncle Sam and another Phantom Lady took in the "lost children" Cherry Bomb and Ladybug,[7] time-lost sidekicks to the original Human Bomb and Red Bee.[8]
