Starting Over is a Gen 13 storyline published by WildStorm through Image Comics. It was written by Brandon Choi and J. Scott Campbell, with illustrations by Campbell. This is the first arc of the Gen 13 ongoing series, following Who They Are and How They Came to Be in their debut mini-series.
Synopsis
Gen 13 get used to their new home in La Jolla with John Lynch. Fairchild worries about her ability to lead the team, but Lynch insists she is the best for the job. Burnout struggles with his crush on Rainmaker, and Freefall struggles with her feelings for Grunge. Freefall goes to a nightclub alone, where she's almost abducted by the villain Trance. The nightclub is also attacked by trans-dimensional Bounty Hunters looking for an animal called Qeelocke. This team includes Hardball, Jade, One-Eyed Jack and Rake. Gen 13 is barely able to defeat them, but they succeed and take Qeelocke as their pet.[1] During WildStorm Rising, Lord Defile sends the villain Helmut to kill Lynch. Helmut interrupts their pool party, but Gen 13 is able to work together and take him down.[2]
Fairchild learns that Lynch is hiding a lead about her father's wherabouts. The team visit Lynch's old traveling companion Caroline MacArthur for information. She sends them to the Isle du Mystere, where Alex Fairchild and her son Jim MacArthur went missing. They travel to Africa, and are separated when a giant storm destroys their boat.[3] Fairchild washes up on shore, where she finds Jim. Grunge and Rainmaker are captured by the Coda, who occupy the Isle. Grunge is made into a sex-slave for breeding, and Rainmaker is tortured as a potential spy. Burnout and Freefall are picked up by the Pirate King, who is at war with the Coda for taking his daughter Daphne. Rainmaker and Daphne make plans to escape, while Fairchild and Jim prepare to attack.[4] There's a massive battle as the Pirates attack the Coda with Burnout and Freefall. Fairchild rescues Grunge from getting sacrificed. Rainmaker saves the life of Majestrix, and forces her to release Daphne in return. The Pirate King is happy to be reunited with his daughter, and Gen 13 are able to finally leave.[5]
Ivana Baiul begins preparing a new team with Bliss and Threshold. Their first recruit is Frostbite. Gen 13 is stranded in Rome due to an airline strike, and they take the opportunity to go shopping. Freefall attempts to flirt with Grunge, but grows angry when he continues to flirt with Fairchild. Burnout has a one-night stand with Rainmaker, and is heartbroken when she tells him it was a mistake. Burnout flies around angrily in the Vatican to blow off steam, which attracts attention from the Order of the Cross. Gen 13 is attacked by the Hand of God, who believe they are super-villains. They battle Armato, Domina, Surge, Velena, and Volare, until they are defeated and captured.[6] Baiul calls her team "The Deviants" and adds Copycat, Evo, Powerhaus, and Sublime to the roster. Bliss shows up to rescue Burnout and Rainmaker, as she has been romantically involved with Burnout. They work together to infiltrate the Order's underground headquarters and free Fairchild, Freefall and Grunge. Bliss negotiates their release by threatening to reveal the Order's secrets through Baiul's network. Burnout and Bliss share a kiss on the plane home, then she returns to the Deviants so they won't suspect anything.[7]
