The man known as Gerald Chamberlain is the butler and mentor of Shelton Lyle, aka Heartless. Although both men are remorseless killers, they truly care for each other and have a quasi-father/son relationship similar to Batman and Alfred.

A nameless criminal fleeing trouble in England met a man named Gerald Chamberlain on a ship to America. The real Gerald Chamberlain was on his way to Gotham City to become a butler for the wealthy Lyle family, and the unnamed man murdered him and stole his identity.

"Gerald Chamberlain" planned to earn the Lyle family's confidence and then murder them for their money, but when he arrived he encountered their son Shelton, a budding psychopath. Gerald recognised Shelton as a kindred spirit and nurtured his murderous tendencies. When Shelton came of age, Gerald planned to murder the Lyles by sabotaging their helicopter so that Shelton would inherit their wealth. However, Shelton was also onboard the helicopter and was almost killed in the crash. Gerald forged an emergency transplant form to replace Shelton's damaged heart with his father's intact one, saving his life. When Shelton woke up, he and Gerald further decided to replace all his damaged bodyparts with cybernetics, transforming him into Heartless.[1]

During Heartless' final confrontation with Nightwing on Bludhaven docks, Gerald fell into the water and did not come back up to the surface, although his body was not found.[2]
