Gestalt are a trio of high-tech jewel thieves in Neo-Gotham who are joined in a hive mind.
History
The three individuals making up Gestalt were originally engineers with a tumultuous interpersonal history. When the Living Gotham spontaneously awoke they were among the few people aware of it.
With the emergence of a superintelligence, they decided that individual human beings were obsolete, and the only way to avoid being enslaved by the machine was to become a superintelligence themselves. They set aside their personal disagreements and used technology to fuse their minds together into a single consciousness, sacrificing their individual selves to ensure they could continue to live freely as part of a greater whole.
Their combined intelligence allowed them to hide from the Living Gotham, but they did not believe it was possible to overthrow it and did not try. They survived by stealing jewels from Neo-Gotham's wealthy elite, planning and executing the only crimes in the city that the Living Gotham could not anticipate or effectively respond to. Batman noticed the pattern of successful robberies and the GCPD's surprisingly slow response. He sought Gestalt out and asked for their help in fighting the Living Gotham, but they refused.[1]
However, Batman later came to them with Beam Boonma, a GCPD officer who had been possessed by the Sword of Gotham, and asked them to help her. They were able to determine that she, Batman and likely everyone in Gotham had been infected by nanites that allowed the Sword to take control of them. They were all forced to shelter in the Batcave, which was shielded from the activation signal, until Gestalt could develop a cure to the nanites. After three months, they were able to remove the nanites from Boonma.[2]
The Living Gotham planned to take control of every civilian in Neo-Gotham at midnight on New Year's Eve using a hard light technology hub which Wayne-Powers were unveiling at Donovan Lumos's Trinary Gala. Batman attacked the gala while Gestalt attempted to hack into the hub and block the signal. Gestalt was unable to stop the signal when it activated at midnight, but the people of Gotham resisted the Living Gotham's control just long enough for Gestalt to shut it down.[3]
After the Living Gotham was defeated, Gestalt became Batman's support and mission control, taking over the role that Bruce Wayne held prior to his death.[4]
