Synopsis for "All the Stage Is a Haunt"

After a depressing tv interview Dr. Thirteen is approached by Serwyn Kowalski who wants him to investigate the supposed ghost of his long murdered friend Gregory Tilson in Rutland, Virginia. Serwyn is convinced it's a fake and that it's ruining his Tilson's good name. Thirteen brings the case to his mentor Dr. Paul Geist. Geist believes it is plausible and pushes Thirteen to investigate.

When Thirteen arrives in Rutland, he interviews witnesses at a small play house. Actress Diana Kirby recounts how the ghost threw a flaming sandbag at her husband Nelson. A stagehand intervened but was killed for his trouble. Owner Ronald Forrest claims the ghost caused him to wreck his car. Suddenly, the ghost strikes again, tossing small fireballs into the play house. Undeterred, Thirteen rushes the ghost and finds Diana to be responsible. He swiftly explains her methods but has yet to deduce her motive. After a quick conversation with Ronald, Thirteen finds that Diana had been offered a part on Broadway but she and Nelson signed a contract together. Ronald wasn't letting them out but if Nelson died, Diana would be free to pursue the role. When she failed to kill her husband, she instead tried to kill Ronald. The last haunting was to remove Thirteen's suspicion from her since he had now seen the "ghost" himself.

Back in New York, Thirteen relays his findings to Dr. Geist. Thirteen think the case was a waste of time and he will not go back to ghost-breaking because all ghosts are phony. Geist asks if he's confident of that and whether he even looked up Tilson's obituary. Geist hands a shocked Thirteen a newspaper cutout that shows Tilson was actually born Sweryn Kowalski in Poland in 1906. Thirteen then realizes that his ghost-breaking retirement may not actually take.
