Green Arrow (Volume 2) #48 is an issue of the series Green Arrow (Volume 2) with a cover date of June, 1991.
Synopsis for "Round the Horn Part 3"
Oliver Queen and his band of mercenaries encounter poachers armed with RPGs who plan to use the weapons against some elephants. When the poachers kill the elephants, Angel Hawkins flies overhead and in anger, she fires on them. When they return fire, her microlight is hit, and she crashes to the ground, prompting the mercenaries to get involved.
Ollie and Ian Carmichael make for the car, but the poachers fire on it, and it explodes, nearly killing them. The poachers begin escaping with their elephant tusks, and the mercenaries are forced to follow on foot. While Ian tends to Angel's wounds, Ollie discovers copies of the same satellite photos that his group has been using to track the animals' movements on the corpse of one of the poachers. Juel decides to stay behind with Angel while Ian, Ollie, and Bryant chase down the poachers, and try to find out who their employers are.
The next day, while following the trail, they encounter one of the wounded elephants who has managed to wander a long way. They risk alerting the poachers if they fire their weapons, and so Oliver is forced to put the creature to rest by loosing an arrow into its heart. Ian explains how the changes that civilization has made to the culture of the African people has devalued the lives of elephants, and as such, the people no longer prevent poachers from killing them for ivory. Oliver looks at what was done to the dead elephant and cries.
Ian turns back when the team nears the border with Mozambique, leaving Oliver and Bryant to spy on the poachers. They follow the poachers to a warehouse, where they load the ivory tusks into trucks. Oliver decides to blow up one of the trucks in order to send the poachers to their employer. After following a man they recognize, they realize that the poachers' benefactor is also their benefactor. Bryant decides to return to London to confront their employers, and Oliver decides to stay in Africa for a while.
Bryant arrives at WWC headquarters, where he reveals to Thaddeus Shabanye that he and his compatriots are helping the corrupt leaders of African nations to increase their personal wealth by aiding poachers rather than deterring them.
Back in Africa, Oliver encounters a fat white missionary atop a horse, preaching to the hungry citizens of the village. Oliver stabs the horse with an arrow, and it collapses. The starving villagers then kill the horse for food.
