Synopsis for "A Small, Unremarkable Planet"

Twenty Years Ago

Green Lantern Abin Sur of Sector 2814 pursues a smuggler ship through an asteroid field, where the vessel ultimately crashes, damaging and scattering its cargo. Abin takes the contrabandist Obba but, unbeknownst to him, a device drifts away and enters Earth's orbit. Later, Sinestro contacts Abin Sur and notifies him of the smuggler shipment that crashed on Earth. Dubbing it a primitive planet, Sinestro orders him to retrieve it and avoid detection so that there's no evidence of alien life forms.

In New Mexico, a U.S. military squad camps in the desert at night. Private Waller has the first watch, and she witnesses the alien device crashing in the distance. She follows the trail to the graveyard of military vehicles. Amanda arrives at the crater, but there's no evidence of what caused it. Suddenly, the metal around her starts to glow and merge, transforming into a machine.

Abin Sur arrives in time to find the alien machine firing at Amanda Waller. He recognizes the threat as a Mechivore, a techno-organic virus that feeds on metal. Abin watches how the human stands her ground against all odds and, to his surprise, destroys the machine by luring it near explosives. The explosion deactivates the Mechivore, but also knocks Waller unconscious. Awed by her courage, Abin Sur tends to her wounds and helps her recover before she wakes up again.

Abin Sur then flies off, taking the whole graveyard in a bubble to dispose of any evidence of the Mechivore's existence, and throws it at the sun. Abin is still unimpressed by the human's primitive, violent nature, but he realizes that Earth has the potential to house promising individuals.

Back on Earth, the Department of Extranormal Operations offers Amanda Waller a "desk job" at their agency.

Twenty years later

The wounded Abin Sur orders his ship to take him to the nearest inhabited planet: Earth. Despite his glooming fate, he smiles knowing that he's heading toward a planet with promise.
