Green Lantern Silver Surfer: Unholy Alliances #1 is a one-shot with a cover date of February, 1996.

Synopsis for "Unholy Alliances"

Cyborg Superman finds himself in a different universe and annihilates a populated planet to build Warworld again. As the Cyborg stands surrounded by death and destruction, the Silver Surfer finds and confronts him. Suddenly, a third player shows up in the battle: Parallax, who attacks Cyborg Superman in retaliation for Coast City's destruction. Silver Surfer stops the fight and demands to know who are the two strangers, but Cyborg escapes.

Parallax explains everything, how they come from a parallel universe, his story as Green Lantern, and Cyborg Superman's crimes. Surfer can relate to Hal's loss and tells his story about how he gave up his life to serve his master, Galactus, only to be an accomplice to terrible deeds. Parallax sees his chance to fulfill his goal to set everything right again and asks Silver Surfer to join forces, who decides to go with it, although unconvinced of doing the right thing.

Meanwhile, Kyle starts designing the logo for Radu's café shop when he hears a nearby explosion. He finds an axe-wielding brute called Terrax wreaking havoc at the park. Kyle also receives help from a stranger, the Mad Titan Thanos, who arrives in time to stop Terrax from killing Green Lantern. Thanos sends Terrax back to his universe and introduces himself to Kyle. The Titan asks Kyle to help him save both of their universes against the threat of Parallax. Thanos also explains that he has a weapon to stop Hal Jordan, but it only works with the energy from Kyle's power ring. Reluctant, Kyle agrees to work with Thanos.

Back in space, Parallax and Silver Surfer combine their powers and miraculously restore the planet once destroyed by Cyborg Superman. Thanos takes Kyle to what once was Oa and explains that the planet's destruction caused a rift between both universes. Thanos uses his machine and Kyle's ring to harness the remains of Oa's energy. Parallax senses his power being drained from the other universe and asks Silver Surfer to take him there. Kyle realizes he was only a pawn in Thanos' scheme to annihilate the universe. Silver Surfer and Parallax arrive in time to find the culprits of the power drain and fight them.

Parallax uses his powers to recreate Oa and Coast City, but Thanos uses his to destroy everything Hal builds. While the power-mad gods fight on equal ground, Kyle overpowers Silver Surfer and explains the situation. Seeing they were both used, Silver Surfer and Green Lantern join forces to drain the energy from both Thanos and Parallax. With the excess of energy dispelled, the rift between both realities starts to close, and Silver Surfer and Thanos return to their universe, with barely enough time for Surfer and Green Lantern to bid farewell.

Kyle returns to New York with a whole new perspective of his power ring's capabilities. As Kyle flies over the city streets, a box lying in an alleyway starts to glow with cosmic energy.

Notes

  • The box in the alley at the end of this issue plays an important role in the DC Versus Marvel limited series.
  • This issue, and by extension the entire DC Versus Marvel crossover series, is arguably in continuity with the mainstream DC Universe, although it's primarily Ron Marz who references events from the crossovers in DC-only stories.
    • The logo for Radu's Coffee Shop Kyle designs at the beginning of this issue later appears in the ongoing series, first in Green Lantern Vol. 3 #78.
    • In Parallax: Emerald Night, Hal Jordan mentions that he pursued the Cyborg "across the universe and even into another", which refers to the events of this issue.
    • In addition, Access, a character originally introduced in the DC Versus Marvel series, makes an appearance in Green Lantern Vol. 3 #87, in a scene that is in turn referenced in Unlimited Access #1.
    • Another reference, albeit tongue-in-cheek, can be found in Extreme Justice #18, where Blue Beetle uses a "fibrous polymer" to entangle two opponents which will "dissolve in an hour or so", and explains he "got the recipe from this guy who just drifted through from some alternative universe recently", referring to Spider-Man.
  • Despite this, the JLA/Avengers crossover, which is in continuity with the mainstream DC universe (the "Syndicate Rules" story arc from the ongoing JLA series is a direct continuation of some of the events from JLA/Avengers), is presented as the first time members of both teams meet, both in-story and according to a statement by writer Kurt Busiek.[1]
